clutch break in period...BS??

i swear the last time i bought a clutch it said that you had to break in the clutch for 300-500 miles or something. but i know several people that say they have never done that with any clutch (performance or not) and ususally start out with a burnout...

Re:clutch break in period...BS??

i thought it was 500 miles also?? are the people that are saying it's not, the ones that are always on here asking which clutch to try next because their current one is slipping?? just wondering.

Re:clutch break in period...BS??

I also thought it needed a 300-500 mile break-in. I guess I have never risked it and just tried to beat it from the start. :-\ I would rather take it easy for 300 miles and be safe instead of burning my clutch up within that 300 miles. :-\

Re:clutch break in period...BS??

yeah, you could just drive on the highway for like 3 hrs. then turn around and come back, this would prolly be about 4-500 miles, but it seems like it would be 3-500 city miles cause you're not really using the clutch on the highway ???

Re:clutch break in period...BS??

geez, you can't just go drive somewhere this weekend? It may save your new clutch in the long run so I would just drive like a granny. ;) Turbohf is the most throttle happy person ever. :)

Re:clutch break in period...BS??

I'm not sure if this is absolutly accurate, but i just recently read on turboford.org (see https://www.homemadeturbo.com/forum/...threadid=12046 if you have any conserns as to why i was there) that if you do not break the clutch in, it will glaze over and it will continually slip, i'm guessing it overheats and like melts, ruining the whole fucken thing and then you would have to go ahead and buy a new one ( major $) and then go ahead and drop the tranny and redo the clutch again...
Form experiance, my buddy did not break his in, and it slipped like hell forever! It did evntually start grabbing though, but only after like 3 months or babying it and not driving it as much. Me, on the other hand, did break my exedy one in and never had it slip yet (but i'm not boosted... but that is a whole nother story.)

you also don't keep an engine in your car long enough to see any problems that might occur as a result of your "never breaking in a clutch" :-X

Re:clutch break in period...BS??

The Ls/vtec and B20 vtec shared the same clutch that was used, no break in period.. Same with my old clutch setup on my ZC, I used it for lots of miles, no break in, no problem

Sorry but I need more than a bone stock D16a6 in my car to satisfy me. Ever heard of mods? its called making your car faster, oh thats right... you into the Cosmetic portion of cars right? bling bling :P

Re:clutch break in period...BS??

i like to know that my car pulls HARD in third and forth gears (even with a 250lbs passneger). now that my clutch is broke in (yeah 100miles ::)) i can say that it ------ pulls hard! even with a O2 CEL and a 'big guy' riding shotgun. think that it needs a little less fuel ::) think i added a little much, not usually a problem just at cruzing speed.... DYNO TIME!!!! ;D

It's OEM and it was all good even took 12 psi boost for a day and 2 weeks daily driven on 7 psi....the gasket blew.

Re:clutch break in period...BS??

lol i also have been told that u should break the clutch in so u dont glaze it over.but i never have done that. i did a swap for my buddy and put a new clutch in, i planned on breaking it in properly but instead i got about 1/10 of a mile down the road put it up to about 4 grand dropped the clutch, smoked em threw 1st grabbed 2nd and away we went, clutch grabs good no slippage.....knock on wood :P,that has been a month ago

Re:clutch break in period...BS??

i never broke mine in and never had a problem, kind of depends on the clutch material, but its common sense, its kind of like a alternator belt seating... u need the clutch to surface the flywheel for a while so it runs over it smooth and grabs, if it is eaten up and not surfaced evenly and the clutch disk didnt make nice grooves in the flywheel, its probably gonna slip, but ------- breaking clutches in, open up that throttle baby and boil them bolognes
