checking bearing clearances
 

well I finally figured out how to figure out what size bearings I need. I went here: http://www.boosted-hybrid.com/viewtopic.php?t=326 (thanks for the link pat) and they say to use your old bearings for measurement. problem is I don't have the old rod bearings (block shipped without pistons/rods) and my mains look like this:

would I be able to get good plastigauge readings for clearance from bearings worn that badly? the machine shop said all the journals were fine and they just polished them.

let me see it the "noob" can help you out...

your block shipped without rods so that means the old bearings don't mean jack to you anyways... use the code on the bottom of the block and cross reference to the #size on the rods your gonna use.

i don't think it'll be a prob plastigaging with the old mains to get an idea. My experience is... if the block never spun a bearing the factory size should be withing tolerence.

Kyle, torque your rod caps on and torque your block girdle (both with no crank) :P Take an inside measurement of what you have as far as where the bearings and crank will go.
Now measure the journals on your crank (not with a ruler) ;D and after subtracting that number from your first numbers (from each journal) you will have a better idea of what size bearings you need. For example:

Main opening 2.58 inches
Crankshaft journal 2.26
-------------------------------------
total space 0.32

If kyle wants .015 bearing clearance, than he needs to buy bearings that are .305 thick.

steve-o is right, you want to use precision measuring tools, not rulers or strings.

in other words.. back to the machine shop for measurments.

damn, the machine shop is going to hate me now if I'm always in there asking them to measure my ----. But I'm sure it's better than me measuring since I can't hold any of the tools straight.

yeah get the machine shop to measuer your ----...i never really had them measured but then again the shopt that i went to told me that a set of clevite 77's would work fine. I had them check the crank and polish it a bit and it worked fine.
