cheap things for going to track
I have a 92 civic sedan, currently with a turbo d15... but i'm upgrading to a d16a6 or y7 and upping the boost for the summer to take it to the track
what are some cheap things i can do to improve my 1/4 mile times. The car will probably never be daily driven or even street driven again seeing as teh quarter panels are ------ rusted out pieces of ---- and the rest of the car is probably well on its way to being the same So far, I'm gonna make rear suspension limiters and traction bars.... other than running slicks what else can I do to help the car out I'm looking for more chassis related stuff than anything, not just "up the boost" thanks for the help nogs! |
Re: cheap things for going to track
whats already done to it? do you have decent suspension? My favorite cheap mod is the ole window weld filling of all the mounts. Or just buy the energy suspension inserts and use window weld to fill the main mounts

Re: cheap things for going to track
I have window weld mounts now, except there starting to look shitty so i'm gonna put new mounts window welded into the car with the new motor
its on stock suspension now, what can be done cheaply to upgrade that, i dont wanna spend tons of money on it because it will honetsly never legally see the street again, its gonna get trailered the 2.5 hours to the drag strip |
Re: cheap things for going to track
Gut everything out of it, Fill the entire block with filler + tt rods and vitaras it shouldn't overheat with just track use, Go open downpipe, get as much airflow to the fmic as possible, spray ic with c02 between rounds. Tons of other things that are just good prep for any car at the strip.

Re: cheap things for going to track
i never had much luck with the wondow weld. i have always used the liquid polyuerethane from grainger industrial supply, 94A FTW. price isn't too bad either, after discount its like $30 but well worth it considering how fast it sets and how solid it makes it.

Re: cheap things for going to track
do you have a welder? because theres lots of stuff you can do then

Re: cheap things for going to track
Buy a sheet of lexan and replace rear side windows.

Re: cheap things for going to track
Well, either crazy high spring rates on the rear springs (like 80 bucks a spring, then pay for shipping), air bags for your current rear springs (not a clue how much they cost), remove rear shocks and replace with a solid rod (cheap, hmt style, but not sure how safe this would be), or a preloaded wheelie bar (if your a decent fabrictor, and if your track allows it) would all be decent ways of preventing weight transfer to the rear of the vehicle. I've also thought about using spare tires for rear wheels if I were ever to drag. Again, not sure how safe this woudl be, but you could get some small ass 13" and the smallest, lightest tires you can find. How much does your car weigh? Find a swap for the brakes that is the lightest ones you can find. Like its been said, gut EVERYTHING you don't need. There is always more weight reduction with money. CF is pricey, maybe find someone selling fiberglass, or be hmt and make your own fiberglass hood. I've thought about using a stock hood, cutting out the middle, then fillin that in with fiberglass. Couldn't be that hard, then you would have the metal 'frame' to bolt to everything. Which gearset is in your transmission. It would be silly to have anything but the Si/Ex P20-B000 final drive at a minimum.

Re: cheap things for going to track
Make suspension limiters... far easier and less destructive than half the ---- you mentioned. You don't need to remove any springs or shocks.

Ad i considered changing rear springs and shocks one of the easiest things i've done on a honda suspension wise. |
Re: cheap things for going to track
for suspension limiters i was thinking of machining some hockey pucks to go in between 2 or 3 coils on each side
Damn wheres JD when you need him? I'm also gonna spray my intercooler with co2 between runs, and i'm working on an old school muscle car style cool can for the gas |
Re: cheap things for going to track
fiberglass hood is in the works too i think... I work at a yacht club full time when im not in school, doing boatyard work, sailing boats and fixing boats, so fiberglass is like second nature to me... and i have good access to materials

on a side note, i was looking for information on fwd wheelie bars. is it suggested that you use preload or not? i remember reading about a crx that had an actuiator attached to them. preload at the line, then say once in third gear he hit a button, up comes the wheelie bar which eliminates the drag at top speed. if you dont have an actuator, would it be best to use prelaod or just have the wheels touching at the line? |

Re: cheap things for going to track
Pull the tranny, split the case, and weld the diff. Depending how far you want to go, pull the fuel tank, make or buy a fuel cell and put this under the hood. Air to water intercooler is a good way to go as well, can load the water chamber with ice or dry ice. Spray water/meth as well. I can't remember if you said traction bars, but those are a must. Anything you can remove to make it lighter is a good thing.

Re: cheap things for going to track
Can also weld webbing/bracing in to brace the shock towers, and go over the factory welds on the frame and body, because apparently they are kinda flexy
|
Re: cheap things for going to track
Go to autozone and get those energy bushings where the trailor hitches are..
they come 14 in a pack for like 12 bucks....pull your rear strut and slide 4 or 5 though the silver pole with the nut on top :l so when your running itll bottom out on the bushings...it makes it reallll stiff. for 1 hour of labor and 12 big ones |
Re: cheap things for going to track
BUy my Zc vtec motor :6.
|
Re: cheap things for going to track
to reduce wheel hop, you can also replace the rear front control arm bushing with urethane ones. the bushings are only 35 bux for the set then just rent a ball joint press from a local parts store to press out the old one. the urethane ones can go in by hand.
