Castle nut is stripped... please HELP!

Yes I know this is the wrong forum. This is an emergency and I need all the input I can get.

I was going to swap in my new motor today and the driver side castle nut for the lower balljoint is stripped and just isn't ------- moving. This is the only thing holding me back from finishing the swap. I have already tried lodging a flathead screwdriver in one of the openings in the nut and banging the ---- out of it, nothing. What are my options? The only thing I can think of is cutting off the nut and pressing in a new balljoint. Anything easier?

Thanks for looking

you can grind down the nut and try to break it by htting it with a screwdriver and a hammer on both sides of the nut. or just grind the whole thing down and throw a new ball joint in.

Thoes things are never the same after they get stripped, they are pretty easy to replace.

Impact hammer with a nice sharp chissel will turn that bitch free, might need a new nut though : P

either grind it down or get some monster vice grips. The nut needs to be replaced, the ball joint should be fine. Good luck man

yea Jago, please please pony up the $34 for the ball joint and get a new castle nut. the ball joint comes out with some finese with a hammer after you take out the snapring.

I stripped a castlenut once and couldnt get it tight enough to put the safety pin through. the result my car losing control, veering across 2 lanes of traffic and me hitting a 19 y/o kid off his motorized scooter. the scooter was toast, but he was ok because he flew over the sidewalk and landed in grass. my control arm had hit the pavement, carving a nice groove, and the drivers side tire was tucked nicely into the wheel well. dont half ass your suspension, it will save your life and money.

Large vise grips and a 12x1.25 dye

Clean up the threads, use a new nut (if the threads are fucked) and dont forget to use a new cotter pin. I get cars all the time that kids mushroom the ---- out of balljoints.

yea, definatly dont half ass this. i was racing a friend at over 120 last year, and as soon as we came to a stop i tried to switch lanes and the drivers side of my car hit the ground. castle nut came off, tire up in the wheelwell, broke 2 of 3 bearings on my inner cv joint. it was a mess. and im very very lucky it didnt happen 2 minutes earlier.

Use the cratsman stripped bolt remover sets. They grab anything and work great. They are pretty cheap too

Well I got that little fucker off.

Pipe wrenches ------ own ;D

I have never encountered such a bitch of a castle nut in my life, even after a few full turns it was still just as hard to turn the entire way until it was off. My threads look ok so I should be able to keep the balljoint in there.

Thanks again for your input everybody, I really appreciate it.

You might want to run a die down the b/j's threads if you have one. If not, just run the nut on good with some form of lube. WD-40, antisieze, KY jelly, whatever.
