Carbon or Rust

I noticed that I have a brown ring at the top of my cylinder wall (A6), most likely thats carbon but then I noticed some brown like spoting just a little lower. Its not alot and I only find it in the #3 cylinder, the spotting that is, all the other cylinders have that ring on top. Is this going to be a problem, or is it no big deal, I'd hate having to buy another block :(

Here's the pics, tell me what you think.

hone it

Re:Carbon or Rust

Any idea how much that would cost?
and will it affect the bore size?

Re:Carbon or Rust

i'm pretty sure honing does not effect bore size. and you can probably do it yourself w/ a honing ball.. again wait for second opinion though.

honing is easy, just borrow on honing tool from someone and use a drill. it doesnt affect the bore size, it just makes the cylinder wall rougher so that the rings will wear perfectly into the cylinder

And make sure u lube the cylinder walls good. It kinda looks like rust to me...was your head gasket leaking?

Re:Carbon or Rust

It might have been leaking from the gasket, I know I bought the block smoking, not alot but it did smoke a little bit. So botton line, a good honing is all I need right?

were do I pick up one of those honing tools you guys speek of?

I'm not too sure where to get a ball hone, but i know u can get the bar style hones from napa. Also try to get some hone oil while you're there.

Is a deglazing hone the same thing?

Re:Carbon or Rust

Yup, pretty much...just try to find one with the highest possible grit...you're looking to scuff the cylinders, not eat through them. ;D
Also a few tips for honing: Use plenty of lube, always keep the hone in motion, and try to keep your crosshatch pattern at a 60 degree angle.
I hope you're changing your piston rings also, right? :-\
