Re:Carbon fiber
If I saw you driving a carbon fiber hatch, i would smash your car. For 3 reasons:
1.) A whole BODY made of carbon fiber would cost ____- (fill in black with 5 digits). With that money you could make that hatch as fast as a 20 winged bat on speed, AND make it look good. 2.) Carbon fiber looks good, but goddamn. A whole car? That's just asking for a 'trailor queen' nameplate to go on it's carbon fiber ass. 3.) CF hoods=good ....... CF car=hulk smash. There's a reason you can't find any websites that sell body kit for 93 hatches, would you like to take a guess why? - Matt |
Re:Carbon fiber
dude...not to poke fun, but you do know you cant just replace the whole body with carbon fiber like changing a fender right

Re:Carbon fiber
all right all right enough hammering i get the idea.
I was jus thinking abt it thats all. lol |
Re:Carbon fiber
if you get to the point where an entire carbon fiber body would even be worth it you will have spent way more money on your car then all of the members of this site put together and you wouldn't need to ask how much it would cost or where to get it because "your people" would handle all of that.
spend your money on a turbo kit or an upgrade to your kit if you already have one put together. |
Re:Carbon fiber

That subaru is awsome! :-*

Re:Carbon fiber
Actually its not too far fetched. Carbon fiber isn't that difficult to work with. Its $37.50 a yard (50" by 36") of 4x4 twill weave 8.3 oz carbon fiber. 5 gallons of 1:3 epoxy hardner is $172.50. I made a carbon fiber center section (between the taillights of a 90' civic) and its not that hard. Carbon Fiber is a cloth and it can be shaped. Also you don't need to paint it so compared to a paintjob its not that expensive.
I'm planning on doing my civic in 4x4 twill weave black carbon with 2x2 twill woven red carbon fiber and I estimated everything to cost about $1000. To me carbon fibering the whole car is cheaper than a paintjob and I can lean up against the car without denting it If you invest in a vaccum bagger (or make one) you can carbon fiber anything with ease as long as you have a mold |
Re:Carbon fiber
You can't take of the roof and put a new carbon fiber roof or the doors?? you would need to do a lot of chopping.
If the boy want to have a civic look like a full carbon fiber body than waht Whitey said is the way to do it, but a reallllllllll fool carbon fiber body...that is only possible with a tube chassis frame. |
Re:Carbon fiber
whitey why would you do that...just adding a shitload of weight
|
Re:Carbon fiber
In case everyone forgot, hondas are UNIBODY. The only way to do this without making all your new carbon fiber panels joints crack on your first turn is to have a tube chassis. Also, there is no cheap way to bond carbon fiber to any sheetmetal that can take any structual loads, which a unibody must do.

Re:Carbon fiber
in case we forgot?...thats the first thing i said (tube frame)
|
Re:Carbon fiber
The only thing you could really replace is the fenders, doors, hood, hatch and bumpers. I wanted to do it to my Civic becuase I just wanted it to look good and plus I wanted to run wider fenders. Also I thought it would look alot better than just a paintjob.
Its not that much weight, if you ever actually used the stuff you'd know. |
Re:Carbon fiber
i have used it to some extent, and from your post it seemed like you wanted to cover the whole car (cheaper than a paintjob)...my mistake

Re:Carbon fiber
that would be kick ass for a volvo. man, my momvs volvo is alrady a tank and now make it even lighter??? HELL YEAH!!
|
Re:Carbon fiber
what kind of place would I be looking for to buy that carbon fiber and resin? I would like to make myself a one piece front end eventually, and it would be pretty pimp to have it made of carbon fiber.
|
Re:Carbon fiber
hey whitney, what's the process of making things of carbon fiber? I've found a few places online (www.fiberglasswarehouse.com and www.shopmaniac.com) that sell it and the resin. do you lay the fiber in the mold then just put resin over it and you're done?
|
Re:Carbon fiber
"i want it becuase it looks good"
why not save yourself the trouble and buy some of that carbon fiber sticker paper off ebay. for a race car, use fiberglass. carbon fiber is too damn expensive for anything. |
Re:Carbon fiber
I don't buy carbon sticker paper off Ebay because I'm not a fag. carbon fiber isn't that expensive when you compare it to fiberglass + prepwork + painting
Carbon Fiber is a cloth so you basically make a mold and paint the resin onto it. Than lots of sanding and clearcoat. Its a very time consuming process |
