Car is soo hot, and messed I'l never get to the dyno!!!! help please

OK, first off here is the set up: First gen b16 turbo, in a 91 crx si.

So recently my temp gauge has been going crazy, waving up and down like a roller coaster while I drive, and the car is extremely hot once I stop and check under the hood. So I was told to change the thermostat it might be sticking, or air in the lines. So I replace the thermostat and made sure I removed any air. Car still does the same, except now its worst.

I will be driving along fine until I’m about to slow down and down shift. The car is so messed at idle. While down shifting I’m trying to give it gas to rev it up and it’s slowly going up but power is dieing and then when I’m at a total stop or almost, car dies!! Try to start it up its turning over and everything, (new battery, and alternator) but its almost like there is no fuel...and then after like 4-5 tries it starts and I continue to drive....at least until another turn or stop occurs...and it repeats it self........And all while the temp gauge is going crazy up and down in that wave motion....

Please help guys any info with help.......anything info didn’t inform you with, just let me know what you need to know about my set up and I will reply as fast as I can.

Thanks guys.

I would check your headgasket, thats what it sounds like just off hand.

Welcome to all the problems I had with my turbo'd b16 that was in my 89 hatch. Every single problem you listed is exactly what mine were...to a "T". Mine ran great for about 2 weeks or so after I pulled the turbo off, then the headgasket blew out. :P Lemme take a stab...are you running BRE for engine management?

no im not running bre...i have the stock ecu, however i have a p72 chip with hondata. not installed...was taking it to my tuner to do that, however there problems occured like 2 days before i had my last dyno appointment. I had to cancel.

slo_crx1 you had the same problems???? which means my head is warped and i need to get it resurfaced and get a new head gasket???? Man i got the head resurfaced like last year....this sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, same issues I had. I changed everything and then some on the cooling system, no luck. Hell, I even went out and bought a 2.5" thick all aluminum bar and plate race radiator to see if it would help...nothing. Took all my turbo stuff off and the car ran great for 2 weeks with no overheating, then the hg let loose in between cylinders 1 and 2.

The only other thing I could come up with was heat soaking the intake manifold. I've been looking at pr3 coding and when IAT sensor goes above a certain temp range, fuel output seems to drop considerably. Less fuel out runs leaner, higher egt's, hotter intake charge, leading back to more heatsoak. See if you can measure the IAT voltage and see what it does...datalogging will more than likely be key here if you can do it.

maybe what i should do is take it to my tuner and just have him figure it out....i wouldnt be able to datalog, i have nothing to do it with. my hondata ecu is not hooked up yet. i was going to get my tuner to install that. I just didnt want to go to my tuner with all these other problems, i knew tuning it would cost a far bit and i was tryin to keep cost down. if i had to pay him to do the head work i wouldnt be able to afford it. I guess im going to keep searching and tryin different things, and i might just take the head off my self and get the head milled once again....man this is soo messed up.

thanks again slo_crx1

Ok think i got it.....car was dieing due to the new after market fuel pump being shorter than factory one....with even 1/4 tank it thinks its empty. Also the main relay is gone on it i think...that makes sense to why its overheating...fan not turning on..the coolent temp sensor not working....I think everything is ok now...thanks all.
