Car acting funny, RICH but knocking?

So I've been having some problems gettin my recently rebuilt engine running. I've used 2 different sets of plugs and both have been pig rich black when I pulled them, and the electrodes look just fine. I'm getting a code 1 for the oxygen sensor which is connected. When driving the car, I press the throttle and it sounds like i'm getting some major knocking and I immediately stop. It also has pretty much no power when I hit the throttle. This leads me to think it's a problem with my ignition timing, but I have set it and the cam timing over and over and they're good. One of my friends said that I need to put the car in some "ignition setting bypass mode" or something like that, you have to remove a plug or something. sound familiar?

also, there is a nipple in the map sensor/ vaccum stuff area that looks like it needs a hose hooked to it, could that be causing this whole dilemma? (i'll take pics when I get home)

thanks for the help

yeah you kind of need the map sensor so hook it up and see what happens

I didn't say the map sensor wasn't hooked up, I said one of the vacuum hoses in that area was maybe not connected. Only problem is I don't have any hoses or nipples on my engine to connect it to.

BTW: I do know the map sensor does need to be hooked up, and I do realize what it does.
Is the vacuum stuff the same on DX's and Si's?

and does anybody know about that having to put the car in a certain "mode" to set the igniton timing?

thanks

your supposed to jump the cel plug that you use to check your codes but it really won't make all that much difference so don't worry about it. but make sure you do it at the right idle rpm.

but from what you are discribing if you have the o2 sensor code that will cause your ecu to think it is getting a false reading from it and cause it to run pig rich to help keeping bad things from happening so that could be a cause to your plugs fouling out.

yeah, most likely the o2 code is making it run pig rich, but the other day when I had it running in my driveway for about 5 to 10 mins at about 2000rpms, the catalytic converter got red hot, so I shut it right off.

also, my car shouldn't even run w/o the map sensor hooked up right?

it can but it will barley run if you can get it to and mostly only at real high rpms.

My car doesn't run w/ the map disconnected. I actually removed it shut off the car.

Get a new o2 sensor.

i guess it depends on the car but my h23 has run with map sensor unhooked and my buddies h22 has also but neaither one would run cold or under about 4000 rpm
