Can you change valve springs/retainers w/o removing head...

Is it possible to change the valvesprings/retainers without removing the head??? my dad said he does it on his v8s using compressed air to hold the valves up... but I'm not sure if its possible on a honda... let me know nooglets.

yes you can using compressed air using the atachement from a compression tester, and a air compressor. (consult your manual) make sure you put the cylinder you are working on to TDC. use no more than 30psi

you need to have a

a valve spring compressor like that. The kit also comes with the attachment for compressed air. I prefer doing springs with the head off I always loose a keeper those damn things are hard to find

That tool does the job but if you have some heavy dual springs to install be prepared for a battle with your forearms.

I wish I knew about this one before, same exact design as the snap-on, I have the snap-on, 4 times the price, I wish I could get a refund

Im sure the snap on unit is better quality. The china one works though but the lever is really made for stock springs. A spring with some real seat pressure with the short lever is a ------ work out.

make sure you block off the oil drain back holes with paper towels, nothing like a keeper in the oil pan.

i don't recommend doing it with compressed air, too easy for the crank to spin and then be tapping on the retainer to loosen it and breaking the air seal and the valve dropping down past the guide, ask me how i know

needle nose pliers through the exhaust port with a flashlight in the spark plug hole trying to spin the crank with your other hand to raises the piston FTL, only took about 6 hours :1

so now i always put the piston down all the way and feed some nylon rope through the spark plug hole and then turn the crank as must as i can to compress the rope against the valves.

If the car is in gear how's it going to turn the motor over? the car it self would have to move or the clutch slip.

forgot to add put the car in gear, chock the wheels , use a crank pulley tool on the crank pulley if you are scared do whatever you can to prevent the piston from going down, 30psi is not enough to move the car while its in gear.

there is enough slop in the drivetrain to move the crank 30* or so with it in gear. I'd vote on rope &/or wrench on the crank pulley.
