Cam gear what the point
ok i know with DOHC motor you can tune your intake and exhaust cams with adjustable cam gears but what about with a SOHC what can you do beacuse you can't advance or retard to intake or exhaust because they on a single camshaft but someone help me if you can i was just kinda curious about it

Re:Cam gear what the point
they are both adjusted atthe same time cause theres only on cam. Iam not too sure how much of advance they can take but I dont think too much.

Re:Cam gear what the point
It seems less beneficial on a single cam, but I'm pretty sure it lets you shift your powerband if needed.

Re:Cam gear what the point
plus it look cool, you can get 50hp from it, if you get it in type R red :-*
But seriously, like they said, it's all tuned or changed at the same time, not too much of an improvement though. I've seen a lot of people with quick d's either going back to stock, or just recommending to use the stock one. Oh and I forgot, this is the wrong forum for the question ;) |
Re:Cam gear what the point
ok thanks i wasn't to sure it seems if you were to advance intake then you would be retarding exhaust i dunno but ok thanks yall

Re:Cam gear what the point
a cam gear really helps on a sohc when you shave a head or block down to retard/advance the timing.
but no, the scavaging effect on a sohc is limited. correct me if i'm wrong tho, but it's good on a boosted engine to retard your base timing w/ it. mike |
Re:Cam gear what the point
Actually after completing my mini-me setup in my Hatch I realized that an adjustable camgear would be beneficial because for whatever reason on mini-me's the cam timing is alway's off a half a tooth. I think it's got something to do with the profi9le of the head. It runs, but I'd like to pick up a cam gear and get it where it should be.

Re:Cam gear what the point
if u got aftermarket cam u can use a adj.gear to dial it to 0.
otherwise it doesn`t really do THAT much. IMO don`t worth it stock wise. |
Re: Cam gear what the point
CRX304 that is true for every .012" you take off the head you can advance the cam gear 1 degree

Re: Cam gear what the point
i seen an improvement of about 5whp through out the power band, when I turned my girlfriend's car. currentlly running a sohc d16y8 with i/h/e cam gear, crank pulley. Making 120 whp and 108 wtq.

Re: Cam gear what the point
I installed one when i changed my timing belt and I did notice some difference with the butt dyno when I was adjusting it...I figured the more adjustability the better for tuning!?!? But yea there is only so much room to adjust before you start having negative effects since you are adjusting intake and exhaust valves at the same time...Matt
