Bike Carbs instead of ITB's... and then FI them!

Hi Guys,

Nice site.

I've pinged over from Lextreme.com as a few of the guys there also read HMT.

I read Jeffs interesting homemade ITB tech feature and wondered if I could pick your collective brains.

I'm building a lightweight track day car. It's a Porsche 944 as nice balanced handling as transaxle in the rear. Then I'm installing a 1UZ-FE Lexus V8 as nice lightweight multi cam V8 engine. The Porsche is fuel injected but mostly thinking of pulling all the Porsche plumbing out and going the carb route as it's easier to set up and wont have to pay for an expensive managemnt system and extensive dyno testing. This is also because the engine is bare of all elelectrics and ECU.

Also have a Vortech to add extra as $ / BHP should be better.

So this is the dilema. Have found in NZ a company that make a carb manifold for a Holley to mate with the modern 1UZ and was going to buy a blow through Holley 4150. Job done.

However.... having read the ITB feature it got me thinking about bike carbs.

For example could I use 2 lots of Carb Honda Blackbird set ups, box them in and pressureise them????

What do you think? Could bike Carbs flow enough? Anyother big carbs other than Blackbird? Was the early 'Busa carbed?

etc etc.

I'm hoping to rev to circa 7750 so need to make sure the fueling would be right.

Cheers in advance

Mark

ya i think carbs + road racing might = fuel starvation (at times)

wanna go carbs get performance carbs aka weber/mikuni. Factroy carbs suck and there is no support for them. Oh and webers are hardly goin backwards 2nd fastest all motor honda in the world sports webers but for daily driving and smog fi cant be beat.

Id rock the Holley.Cheap, simple and is fairly easy to setup for boost. What are you going to do for a distributor? Is there something you can adapt? Here is a good link for how to setup a Holley for boost.

Yeah I know, but it's not that simple.

I've got the car
I've got the base engine
I've got a Vortech S Trim.

What I haven't got is much money left.

The money sucking problems are:

The car body needs work as it's messy, plus suspension and brake upgrades are going to cost.

I don't have ane ecu or sensors with the engine

Adapter plates, flywheel and clutch fabrication are all going to cost big bucks.

So you can see why I looked at a cheap easy route of a blow through set up. Just need carb(s), manifold adaption and an ignition unit.

Was thinking of an American (I think) unit called HXI .... (I think .... got the details somewhere)

That's why I asked about the bike carbs and blow through. In working on this project I've got a lot more to worry about and spend cash on than just the induction system

Any more comments welcomed

Cheers
Mark

p.s. thanks to 90dx for the carb rebuild link.
