subarus do this in the mid 90's to '05 in n/a motors. the pistons are too short to stabilize themselves on a 100mm bore, and the blocks weren't properly heat treated on one side in the later years. i know it's not a subie, but the same reasoning can apply

i have heard vitara blocks, this is way too loud and it gets worse as it warms up where vitara motors usually get quieter as they warm up. my head gasket is leaking oil so since i have to pull the head, i am going to take a few more min and pull the pistons to check out the wrist pins. after a few phone calls to JD and sewell94 i am fearing the wrist pins are screwed in some way or another. i also have a brand new set of vitaras sitting here that will probably be going in cause of this wrist pin issue. i just hope the rods arent screwed. i could probably have new bushings pressed in, but i figure a new set of TT rods cost pretty damn close to having the bushings made and put in

ok, so to anyone that cares i found the problem. it turned out to be a worn wrist pin. used parts FTL!!! luckily i bought a new set of pistons expecting the pistons to be worn causing the noise. i tore it down friday night and with a little imagination you could feel the play with the wrist pin in the rod. luckily i bought those pistons ahead of time. i slapped it back together yesterday and fired it up in the garage, got it up to operating temp, bled the cooling system and there was no noise other than the vitara diesel sound. today i put about 15-20 miles on it and it runs great, doesnt leak, rattler, smoke, etc. now to drive 3 hours so it can be tuned

Sweeeeet.

Did you go with fresh rings, or just reuse the low mileage ones you had?

i used new rings cause they came with the pistons and i had one ring different from the rest in the last set. i broke one during assembly. i dont know how it happened, i was using a ring installation tool too.
