b16a wont start need help

yeah i have this ef with a b16a and doesnt seem to want to start. itll start up and crank over but stalls instintly. i tried getting the cel codes but its not showing any cells i look at the ecu LED and it blinks once and stays off. and i cant find the plugg you by pass to check for cels. could it be a faulty ECU ?? or fuel pump? you think it could be because my bro tried to port match the TB??

any help will be greatly app.... ;D

Re: b16a wont start need help

ive searched the forum and it basically says its the main relay and i thought that it is that to and so i bought a new one and it did the exact same thing.

1. cranks over, then runs boggiog for 1 two to seconds and dies

this is wat ive tried replaced the main relay, checked all fuses and all are good, thinking about the fuel pump but from wat ive read people that have posted the same problem that i have ended up with the main relay.
iam going to see wats up with the ignigtion first and then if that doesnt work then fuel pump . But if that doesnt work wat do you guys recommend???

on the relay...

you get in the car, turn the key to the first click. you should hear the fuel pump prime, then a click from under the dash. thats your main relay.fi fyou dont hear that, then the fucker is bad. I think your relay is fine if the car is starting and then dying. sounds to me like a vac. leak somwhere.

Re: b16a wont start need help

Why does everyone always assume a vac. leak? Vacuum leak usually means more air being sucked in, i.e. higher rpm than normal. What ecu are you running? What injectors are you running? Is there a resistor box on the injectors? Is it an auto b16 motor? Was it a dx, hf, or si chassis? If it was a dx, did you do the mpfi swap completely? Need a little more info than what you're throwin' out here :S

Re: b16a wont start need help

yeah imma go try the click method in a little bit.

I am running a chipped pr3, running stock 0bd0 B16A injectors, yeah theres a injector resistor box its a 91 SiR, my B16A is a cable tranny.

Im thinking it might be my ECU cuz it was chipped twice by the same shop because the first time he didnt burn it in right. it ran fine after he chipped it agian . But then car was sitting in my garage for 6 months went to try to start it and it started once ,ran for a few mins then it happened. my battery is also drained, but will jump start and crank over and dies.

oh yeah a pm6 will work on my B16A because I swapped my PR3 wit the PM6 and still didnt start??
Im about the go on a troubleshooting journey right now.

Re: b16a wont start need help

the pm6 should start the engine.

when you start the car, it runs for 1 or 2 secs, then it dies, does the CEL and everything reset like you just turned it to "on" or does it just die.?

if it "resets" like you turned it off, and back to on then you have a bad ign switch.

I had a similar problem in my car. at first it was a bad main relay, but i just kept clicking on and off til it clicked, then after i replaced the main relay the car would start dying once in a while right after i started it. Ign switch was bad, replaced that now it starts every time.

Re: b16a wont start need help

im not following what your saying. well I crank the motor and itll crank over sometimes and somestimes it just wont crank over. itll just die the motor trys to stay on but bogs and dies out. ignition switch it the whole ignition right? from the key entrance to the harness? or just the harness? how much would that run for could i just use an old one from my other 91 SI?

theres no cel on. it goes away in a couple of seconds when i turn the key and LED on my ECU lites up once when i turn the key and disappears.

Re: b16a wont start need help

ya the 88-91 should be interchangeable. its just the harness thats on the back side of the key tumbler.

this piece on the left, it extends down into 2 harnesses and plugs in. harnest part is getting to those little screws that hold it to the back of the key cylinder. when you start it, it'll catch, then when u release the key it goes too far back and loses the connection.

I say swap the one in from the 91 to check it out.

Re: b16a wont start need help

also, before u swap ign switchs, test voltage @ the fuel pump, maybe its dead.

Re: b16a wont start need help

i know what ur problem is. my buddy had the same problem in his 95 civic dx with a 91 sir jdm swap. as u said u played around with the timing belt in ur first or second post. so check ur -timing belt tensioner spring-. the timing might be off too. but my buddy and i check everything just like u are doing and it was just a little thing like that. so check it out and let me no if im right or not. thanks -swope-

Re: b16a wont start need help

okay ill try both ign switch and timing tensioner spring. okay now wheres the timing tensioner spring located??

i dont think its the fuel pump becuase it turns on when i turn the key.

now the motor wont crank over it just wont start now.
im cornfussssssssssed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: b16a wont start need help

heres wat happened today while messing with it. i messed with the ignition swtich first didnt replace it jus took the plug with the blu and white wires coming from it off the ign swtch. and put it back on then checked my main fuse box and 15 amp fuse was blown repalced that and then checked all of the grounds and battery cables then checked if the fuel pump ans main relay clicks and works then jump started it and it stayed on but was idling rough real badly. so i checked the FITV and tighten the ring cap all the way down and then finally checked to see if tensioner was loose and tighten it back after puting it to TDC and now itwont start again. its like before doesnt crank over. only starts and stays on if i step on the gas pedal when i let go it dies out quick... iono wat to think of now all i can think off is to change my oil and oil filter and see wat happwens there

Re: b16a wont start need help

When was the last time you changed your fuel filter? Fuel does start to gum up after sitting for long periods of time. Try taking off your injectors and cleaning out the screen filters, and replace your fuel filter and see if it gets you anywhere. Otherwise it might also me your timing on the motor itself, if the tensioner loosened up all the way it might've jumped a tooth or two. Check and see if all your tdc marks line up for the pulley and the cam gears.

Re: b16a wont start need help

hmmm... sounds like a clogged fuel filter. try changing that. i had the same symptoms.
