anyone ever rebulit an S80?

I'm thinking about rebuilding my S80 GSR hydro transmission, due to the fact that I have no reverse. does anyone have any instrucional documentation on it? like tear down/rebuild info, torque specs, parts that HAVE to be replaced, etc... this info would be greatly appreciated!

Also, will gears from an LS (cable trans) fit into my S80? And whats the best combo of gears for an LS turbo? I heard something like 3rd and 5th are what to use from an LS trans w/gsr 1,2,4 gears. thanx.

download the service manual
its easy to change tranny parts
its also easy to fuckup

The bolt that you seem to be missing ties the reverse idler shaft to the case and keeps it from flopping around when its under load.

Im guessing thats why your reverse doesnt work ;)

yea thats my problem.

how can i fix this?

Re: anyone ever rebulit an S80?

If you cant see the threads that should be visible through that hole then you are going to have to split the case. Hopefully you haven't destroyed the case and or the shaft and idler gear.

Re: anyone ever rebulit an S80?

okay to clarify, that pic isnt my tranny, but i used it as reference.

I took the bolt out and put it back before, and didnt have reverse when i got the car running. i pulled the bolt after doing this research, and I can see threads. the bolt wouldnt stay in without those threads, right?? Anyway i threaded the bolt back in and I still dont have reverse...

Worse case scenario, Can anyone help me get a write up on how to fix this? I been searching and cant find much on it.

Re: anyone ever rebulit an S80?

If you can see the threads and the bolt tightens down then the reverse idler shaft is in the correct position. If you have all the other gears then it is probably something wrong with the shift mechanism inside. Have you looked at the manual and studied how the trans comes apart? I would be more than happy to do a writeup if I had another trans lying around. :(

I'd luv to look at a tech manual on how to tear down/rebuild, but i cant find one. I dont have an extra S80 sitting around either. I do have a cable YS1 extra tho, but they are different so that wont help if i tear down and rebuild

Re: anyone ever rebulit an S80?

You could have also jewed the 5-R slider. If you smacked into 5th while the gear was only partially engaged and tweeked the slider, then it won't be able to go into reverse.

Did you try to take apart the case already? Looks so from the pics.

Actually the internals are the same the only difference is the way that the clutch is actuated. I put the ITR LSD into my YS1 when I did the rebuild. >:D

You can send me the ys1 and I would be more than happy to do a writeup on rebulding one for you. :-X

Re: anyone ever rebulit an S80?

the input shafts are different, but ur saying the gears are the same? I Didnt think the YS1 had the reverse idler screw on it either..??

JonDouglas 05-26-2006 08:52 PM

Re: anyone ever rebulit an S80?

Don't know whats up with the input shaft being different. The pre 92 transmissions had a different input shaft but I didn't think that the YS1 was produced before 92. I know for a fact that the YS1 has a screw to hold the reverse idler shaft in place. The gears are not exactly the same, different ratios and different mainshaft on the non VTEC, but the internals are pretty much the same. I could be wrong but I know the VTEC YS! trans that is in my teg has the screw and that I can swap S80 partsinto the case if I want to.

I plead the 5th as not to add any more bullshit to a already shitty thread.

Eh, just trying to help out and share what I have read and what my experiences have been. Take it with a grain of salt I guess.

As for swapping internals: http://www.outlawatvclub.com/users/s...ny_how_to.html

Re: anyone ever rebulit an S80?

thanx for the input, but i've decided that i'm going to take a different approach. I'm ordering a trans rebuild book thru honda, then i'm gonna go to my bro's house and pick up an extra S80 we have and swap em, then i'm going to rebuild my old one and do a nice write up on it O0

Good luck with the rebuild. It's not terribly difficult.
