Im building a d16z6 right now. Y8 crank, y8 rods, arp rod bolts and head studs, P29 pistons and .0025 off the z6 head. I ported it the head and mani myself. I still trying to decide what cam to go with. I know people who the same set up on eagle rods and JE pistons on 165 runing 11.40s..... But Im going to prob get spacers for the head to drop the c/r so I can spray it alittle. This is my frist NA dseries so Im guessing on alot of stuff.
Bro, talk to builthatch on HT. I dunno if the various SOHC heads like different cams, but he was pretty specific about the one he ran in his Y8: I think everything else he tried netted him 8-10 less to the wheels.
How much off are the D15B7 valve reliefs compared to a vtec head? If the measurements I got from solblu's D series compression ratio calculator are correct, a D15B7 with a Y8 head, and a Y8 two layer gasket, with some ARP head studs, and rod bolts should keep your piston-to-head clearances happy until 8500-9000 RPM. The Y8 head needs a bit of work to make it "nice" for flow (spot face, valve job, etc...). Throw in a good cam, and good supporting manifolds, and exhaust, and that motor will scream.
toss a good cam into a D15B7 mini-me and your gonna smack valves, pics were on www.d-series.org
Only 2 cam choices, ZEX 59300 (59500 was never released) and Crower Stage 3.
But VTEC is very over rated for the SOHC! You really only need the VTEC low cam lobes to get a nice idle.
