count the teeth on the spline to tell if its an 88. The SI trans are S3 or something. I know everything else are L3

"without taking the trani off"

i read on honda tech 88's are only different.

89-91's are 21 spline, so chances are i got a 89-91.

No 88-91 say "S3" on them all L3. I think all 89-91 use the same clutch but 88 is the only odd ball. Their is something on the side of the tranny too tell if its a Si like PL400 or something like that.

The head has a stamp on it saying the year of it. I beleive its between 2-3 or 3-4 cylinders about 1/2 inch above the ports, it should say like 88 or 89 etc/etc

I believe there's a gold sticker, with black letters on your tranny. I don't remember how, but I think you can figure out the year with those numbers. Yeah sorry very unsure, but I think that's how I did it. ;D
