6 puck unsprung on a DD?

Is anyone running a 6 puck unsprung disk on a DD? I just got an act HD pressure plate with the 6 puck unsprung disk for my 2000 civic si and Im a little worried about how rough its going to be for everyday driving. Would I be smart to switch out to like a performance disk or something?

Yes that would be very unwise. I have friends who have done it, but they never enjoyed it. I would go with an organic performance full-face. I had a exedy stg 1 organic clutch on my LS, and it was still kinda hard to drive in traffic, but it was MUCH smoother than any 6 puck clutch engagement I've experience in a Honda performance oriented clutch.

alright thanks. Is there any other options for disks I could go with besides ACT brand? Like would an Exedy stage one disk work with an ACT pressure plate?

Re: 6 puck unsprung on a DD?

does it have a solid or sprung center section

Re: 6 puck unsprung on a DD?

the disk I currently have has a solid center section. Does that mean that the pressure plate can only use disks with solid center sections?

Re: 6 puck unsprung on a DD?

solid centers general have a harsher engagement more so then a sprung center

Comes down to what kind of person you are. If you can handle solid motor mounts and no ac itll be fine. if your a comfort freak the full disc

I'm running an action 2md on my hatch. It's engagement is remarkably smooth for an unsprung disk.

Drive many a friends with unsprung hubs and they actually felt pretty smooth. No back and forth spring action felt smoother in the take off.

I did not get to see how well it slipped though, for nice street launches.

Im putting a 6 puck unsprung in my car tomorrow with a 11 pound flywheel. Ill tell you how it feels after im done. But hey i like that jerky felling when i drive, its make me feel like my car has power. :6

Re: 6 puck unsprung on a DD?

PUT it in and i love it but thats because my clutch was so bad if i got on it hard it would slip. No chatter just grab lots and lots of grab. ;D

Re: 6 puck unsprung on a DD?

yea i have a act 4 puck in my 95 ex coupe and it does chatter and engage pretty rough but its manageable being the fact that i have hasport auto to manual swap mounts to make it even more stiffer and all the dash componets raddlle lol it kinda sucks when iam with my wife she hates it i love it.

Re: 6 puck unsprung on a DD?

WHY does everyone think sprung hubs have ANYTHING to do with your engagement. the sprung hub is only there for added harmonic dampening, the number of pucks have everything to do with it less pucks mean a sharper engagement. the holding power is determined by the material of the pucks. factory vehicles dont have puck style clutches to smooth engagement. a 3 puck engages harder than a 6 puck ect.

this all came from a sales rep @ SPEC clutches. I could be wrong, but i have yet to see any reason to not believe the guy, he got me a great deal on a stage 3 clutch disc, 170 vs 250 from everyone else.

ps ive been running a 4 puck stage 3 for the longest.

i think you need to pop your mammas titty outcha mouf and grow up :P

an unsprung clutch will only cause damage to the tranny in the long run...

Re: 6 puck unsprung on a DD?

its not that bad, fast2camcivi and drunkinmaster1 both ran an unsprung disc in a 400hp daily driver and didnt have any issues.

Re: 6 puck unsprung on a DD?

I ran 2 6-puck unsprung for 6 months each in my S1 b-series tranny. Other than the chatter on engagement the only other issue I had with it was breaking the material on the clutch itself. :P They never seemed to last more than 6 months at a time, and the second one started getting a hairline crack around the hub of the disc itself. Went back to an organic sprung disc and no problems since then. :)

Re: 6 puck unsprung on a DD?

Ive used two diffrent clutches with turbo that did not work in my crx. stage 2 act and stage 2 exedy. i bought a clutch masters sprung segmented organic clutch with a hdpp. stage 2 slipped at 3lbs boost in 5th gear. 12lbs boost now with absofutely no slip. Launches hard, feels stock, at the pedal and engagement. Very Impressed!!! ;D

Re: 6 puck unsprung on a DD?

I've found/seen that 6 pucks when daily driven tend to brake more stuff (axles) and wear out your motor faster in instances when you really don't need that strong-clamping of a clutch (kills the bottom end of most Honda motors after long enough).

I think it was Mista Bone who recently had a little rant about how people overbuy the clutch which inturn fucks the bottom end (thrust bearings), wheras they should have just stuck with a clutch that reasobably held the power, w/o being overkill.

ACT and EXEDY clutches come off the same assembly line! they just stamp a diffrent name in the pp. korean made!

Do you have any proof of this? Not saying i don't believe you, it's just that I've never heard of this before.

pics? on the left of each pic is an act stage 2 and on the right is an exedy stage 2 for my application. below each is the disc. let me clarify. "for my application they are the same damned clutch other than the price"

Pics don't justify that for me.

I only got one summer out of my Spec 4 puck. Worked good for a couple hundred miles, now it chatters any time it's in boost. I have yet to yank the tranny to find out what the hell is going on. Hope thats not normal.
