5 Spd Tranny Fluid...

I think I may need to change it. Is there like a certain amount of time or miles that it needs to be changed? It's a 5 speed so I really don't know how to check it. Sorry for being such a n00b on this one, but I'm not sure how or what to do. The reason I wonder is because when I back out and go from R to 1st it is kinda loud. Like the syncros are loud. Same as if the car was off and I pulled it from like 1st to 2nd or something or put it into/took it out of neutral. Can anyone explain if this is normal or what I might need to do here? And again I apologize for being so n00b on this.

just pull the plug loose and get a few drops on some paper.

if its not clean like new oil, change it.

put some honda mtf in there or even a good motor oil... gm syncro mesh is also another rout you could go.

if its a fwd honda.... 10w30 ma nigga, gm syncromesh or honda MTF also work great. the car doesn't have to be on a level ground to check the oil, you can jack the front end up and pull the fill plug and stick your finger in there to feel if its at a good level.... atleast this is how i do it. filling it can be tricky, hehehehe.

also, there is always a audible click when you put your car into reverse. If its grinding when you try to go in reverse.... push in the clutch, put it in first, then reverse, since reverse gear is syncronised with 1st gear, it decreases the chance of it grinding.

and another thing.

The gears for the reverse gear are spur gears, they arn't helical like the forwards gears (helical means the teeth are positioned at an angle, makes the gears stronger and has a gradual, smooth engament) so thats why reverse gear always makes that loud rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr noise when you are backing up.

hope that helps, good luck.

theres a drain plug, just undo it a little bit and put it on real fast... it most likely will get messey, usualy does ;) if its ok, then stick with it. but if its bad, just drain it all.
i would just pick up some honda mtf. theres a spot on the tranny case to fill. what you do is just keep adding it untill it starts to ooze out of where your filling. when that happenes, it is filled up properly.

when your tranny starts grinding, its usualy a sign of a bad clutch, but not always.. so keep that in mind.

Cool. Thanks.

No its not the click and rrrrrrrr Spenser. It's really LOUD going into gears if you are just sitting going through them.

I'm going to just jack the car up. Pull the plug a little. See what the fluid is like. If it's bad or low (how do you know if it's low?). I'll go get some tranny fluid for it. Where do I fill it at? Is there a "Hey right here dumby!" sign on the tranny? Does all this sound right? Thanks guys!

My Y7 tranny has over 400k on it and I replaced the oil with GM Syncromesh and now its good to go only grinds if I try to change gears too quickly, before it would between almost all gear changes. I even have Y8 tranny spare but dont want to put it in till I really need it.

the information is there, easy to find, google it, honda-tech search it. I"m not trying to be rude but it would be easier for both you and I you found it on your own.
