while your car is on, i.e. when its overheating, grab the upper radiator hose. if it is as hot as a **** your tstat is opening, if its not that warm, then it has failed and is stuck closed.

or you could spend 8 dollars and replace it yourself and know that it's not the problem

 

throw the thermostat in a pot of water with a candy thermometer in the pot. when it pops open hope its between 160 and 215

Your thermo is getting stuck only partially open. ---- like this happens at the start of winter. Take it out, get a low temp from Advance, throw it in, call it a day.
