1979 celica supra

My firend found an almost mint condition 1979 celica supra that's been sitting in a barn for about 7 year now. I'm gonna help him get it running.
Here's the deal, there is NO info on these things besides the specs. I found out it makes 110 hp and is a 2.6l inline 6 with a frieaking 8.5:1 compression ratio.
So, yeah I'm thinking about brainwashing him into turbos, there is just NO damn info for these things!

Re:1979 celica supra

those cars look like absolute -------, but it could make a hell of a sleeper. if you overnight parts from japan.

that's what I was thinking but there is NO info on these things, and yes they do look like cheese wheels. Anyone know if toyo parts are interchangable in the block?

Re:1979 celica supra

I would say swap a different engine in it. the 5mge from the 82 - 85 supra will fit with little modification. The engine is 160hp. But if you really want some power, throw the 7mgte engine in it.(from 86-92 supras)It has 230hp.

I would say engine swap would be the only way to go because I believe the 79 celica supra has a 4me in it and i am pretty sure you wont find parts for that.

I wouldnt put it out to pasture. Sorry i am an old RWD Toyota Fan

Just my $0.02

give it to me :)

The tranny and rearend in that car is very strong, so yeah, go ahead and throw in a 7mgte, it shouldn't be too hard of a swap, I think the block is nearly identical.

Re:1979 celica supra

I found out the 4me is a 2.6l inline six running a whopping 155hp and has 8.5:1 compression, think I should try to turbo it or just swap, and do the tranny'es bolt up between the m series motors?

Yeah, its a 6cylinder! The Supra 7m could be swapped in or better yet with the time and $$$$$$ you could put the 2JZ (twin turbo)in. I've seen a '81 Corolla at Englishtown with a 2JZ. Didn't take pics but bad ass anyways!! 8)

Re:1979 celica supra

OPKay, I took a look at it yesterday, the calipers were seized on all four corners so once I got it rolling and some new gas in the tnak it will turn over but not run. The guy who owned it said it had a blown headgasket so he put new oil in it and parked it.

Here's the symptoms:
It blows smoke heavily.
will only run at WOT and dies at part throttle(haven't tested this out yet.)
There is a LOUD knocking noise when it does run and WOT.
and some random "sensor" light comes on and stays on. I gues this is the check engine light so I'll figure out how the diagnostics are.

I'm pretty sure atleast one of the injectors is frozen so I night try to get them cleaned or rebuilt, but does a hdeagasket usually make a loud ------- knock when the engine is running? I'd hate to open head up and see a rod where it shouldn't be or something...

With any engine that has been sitting for along time, many thing could be wrong.

Check the obvious things:
Fuel, spark, and compression.
-If there is a blown headgasket, compression in a couple of the cylinders may be low causing it to run very rough.
-As you said, fuel injectors may be frozen.
-Check all spark plugs to see if they are fouled
-Or if you are still unsure...drop the oil pan and take a look

But with a blown headgasket it will run rough and blow alot of smoke

Re:1979 celica supra

the knocking could be rod knocking.

Re:1979 celica supra

yeah it's definately a bhg, i check it out today, chocolate covered valvetrain baby, oh yeah...
Anyway, I'm gonna flush the engine after the head goes back on and tap the injectors with a mallet to make sure they're not sticking, that should do it ithink, thanks for the info guys.
