read up tard. they DON'T know what causes it... They DON'T know what causes 99% of the world's diseases. They're relying on outdated info. 1951 huh? you mean before they broke the genome and are just now studying genetic disorders beyond the level of a highschool biology class?
STFU and go home.

Finally, I can spit some science on you guys

It is caused by a change in the structure of a protein expressed in epidermal (skin type) cells. Proteins contain parts called "motifs", which confer both structure and function. The 2 best known one are alpha-helix and beta sheet. http://tidepool.st.usm.edu/principle...otStruSeco.gif

If you mutate a base pair in a gene that encodes for an amino acid that usually doesnt show up in that certain motif, you ---- up the motif. When this happens, the protein takes on a different structure and usually has its charged amino acids all in the wrong places. One majpr side effect of this is that the protein becomes "sticky", in that the charged groups on its exterior bond to other charged groups. The result is a protein aggregate or "plaque" (this is what causes Alzheimers as well, amelyoid precursor proteins aggregate together and you get the formation of these big protein ***** that ---- with the functioning of the neurons in the brain).

In this case, the mutated protein forms plaques that seem to attract keratin (protein that makes up your hair and nails). This is what causes the "shell" on the child.

I dont forsee there ever being a cure for it for 2 reasons

1. it is so rare that it isnt a priority
2. it happens so early in development that it would be very hard to treat genetically, the window of opportunity to treat it would probably be within the time that a woman doesnt even know she is pregnant yet.

All they can do for right now is look at cases and trace familial lines to try to figure out what gene it is. Once they do that they can test parents for the presence of that mutated gene and prevent them from having children. Since the disease is recessive (you need to have the mutated gene on both copies of your chromosomes), it is more likely to occur in matings between family members. \

Science owns you.

read up on what a control is -----. What he just said is ALL recessive genetic disorders need both parents to carry the mutation, that's correct. However the incedence and likelihood of both parents being related AND carrying the mutated chromasome are so small that this can't be used as a successful control. In other words, you're wrong, you'll always be wrong, and if you understood any of what the guy just said you would understand that.
