The world's most powerful diesel engine

Just.... wow.

http://www.ultimatestupidity.com/pics/1/diesel/

108,920 hp at 102 rpm
5,608,312 lb/ft at 102rpm

ahaha 4 bolt mains ----------ers

just kidding, we all know that gm 4bolts are weaker unless tapped at an angle in a 2bolt block

Knife edging the crank is good for increasing the redline to 112 RPM, I hear.

Hell yeah, those lightening holes in the crank probably account for a 300+ lb weight savings per hole. :-\

The Wartsila-Sulzer RTA96-C turbocharged two-stroke diesel engine is the most powerful and most efficient prime-mover in the world today.

I'd really like to see the snailshell that boosts that ----------er.

When the bottom end of your motor has a ladder and you need a overhead crane to change bearings that ---- is manly :y

these are from an engine half the size, same company...

so what's a "prime mover"?

I don't know whether fuel oil counts as diesel, but a few of the power plants run on those, makes 100,000 hp look like childs play, power stations kick out around 30MW (~500,000 HP)

Straight 10 FTW! You should hear that thing between 80 RPMs to redline after VTEC hits. OMFG!

id like to see how they keep timing in that thing

thats not how the generate electricity. its created through high pressure steam and boilers. not an engine turning a turbine, thats far far to costly in fuel.

Right, burning fuel (oil, coal, etc) to make steam is much more efficient and way way cheaper.

Re: The world's most powerful diesel engine

your right of course. I'm forgetting my thermodynamics lectures! :P

what about the gas turbine engines used in ships? Not reciprocating, neither do they use steam. And they're really big :S

BTW, this is seriously ancient ;D

Turbines are lighter and have a smaller footprint, but they cost more to run. They are not as efficient either. Most of the ships that use turbine engines are cruise ships. Bling Bling.

That engine there is really quite efficient. Only 0.278 BSFC. I wish my D15 could do that.
