Yeah, it's understandable why everyone calls laptops "labtops." I mean, you put it on your lab when you use it...sooo labtop makes sense.

The answer to your question is to buy a range extender. It acts sorta like a bridge between the router and your labtop. It boosts the weak signals.

I had one I used to borrow someone's internet across the yard for a long time.

keep in mind a range extender has no security to it so anyone can access your extending signal, so if you are paranoid or dont want anyone on your ---- get a better router, wireless-N is where its at they are pretty cheap (90-150 for a linksys) now a days and go about 4x the distance range amount of a 802.11 wireless-g.

hope this helps.

He's pulling the signal from a nearby library, he doesn't have access to changing the router. I don't think security is too important to him, and if it is he'll need his own router :P

if you want to steal a signal from someone, the buy a external usb wifi adapter, get a large kitchen bowl and line it with tin foil, then suspend the wifi adapter in the middle of the bowl , then tape the bowl to the window.

its basically a wifi satelite. works perfect, me neighbor hasnt paid for internet in 2 years.

But in order to access their router, you need to be connected to the network. Which means you need their WEP/WPA password. Which isn't a default.

Yah like JagoJon said, you can't do ---- with their settings unless you can connect to the router.

There are tools that you can use with certain networking cards to record a bunch of network traffic and "figure out" the key, but AFAIK it only works on 802.11b networks, and most people now use g or n.

It IS useful when someone leaves their network unlocked. I'll enable mac filtering, add their computers and mine, change the routers ip to something funky, and change the password. If things go welll they'll never ---- with it, and if they try to they'll give up when they can't get to the settings. Worst case they'll reset and probably leave it open again.

Re: wireless internet, how to get a better signal?

I just found an unsecured wireless network named "NETGEAR". Mine went down for some weird reason just now and that one popped up. I lost it now, but I would like to connect if possible. :6 I hate how unreliable my wireless network is. :3

EDIT: I think someone is ------- with my ----. :7 How do I find out who? I'm gonna go kick someones door down. :7 Can I do anything to ---- with their ----? Send viruses? Gay porn? Midget porn? Anything? :7

I'm changing my network name to "Get off my network you dirty ------- beaners!"
