Which Windows to install?

I have access to install anyone one of these Windows products:

Windows 95
Windows 98
Windows 98 SE
Windows 2000
Windows ME
Windows XP (Home/Pro/Corp)

Which do you think I should install? I'm thinking 2000, XP, or 98 SE. However, ME would be the easiest for me to install (have disks right here), and Windows 95 with all the patches and fixes seems to be really stable. What do you guys think?

Re:Which Windows to install?

I'm seriously considering 95, 3.1 wasnt really an OS (It was actually just a DOS GUI). My grandfather's company always used 95 until like, two years ago, when they upgraded to 98 :P. I'm thinking Windows 98 with all the patches and fixes and crap. XP didn't let my sound card work when I had it, screw that. So I don't know.. I'm thinking 95, 98 SE, or XP Pro.

Also: ME sucks so bad, it should have NEVER been released. I'd rather rock Windows 3.11 than ME.

what software you running and also what hardware you using.
if they are older, they may not work well on the later operating systems.
i would recommend xp if you have up to date drivers for everything.

Re:Which Windows to install?

i find 2000 the best of both worlds beuase its compatible with almost anything. if xp doesnt run it, 2000 will.
and if it doesnt run under 98, 2000 will run it. plus its pretty quick, and simple.

I used to be interested in screwing with computers, went to school for it, and switched operating systems and dual boots like every other week.

Then I realized that computers were boring, so I installed XP and went outside to turn wrenches on my car.

If you cant decide, do a win95/winxp dual boot and then you have choices.

oh hell lets get nasty, i vote OpenBSD

i guess it depends, if you have a really shitty computer use 95 or 98, if you have something decent 2000 or xp

I was thinking of doing Win 98 SE/XP Pro.. I know how to parition it in half and to install each OS.. but does the menu that comes up with "which windows do you want to use" automatically show, or do I need another program to do so?

lol I am just like you , except i didn't go to school for it (yet). I have lots of books and that is basicly what i did in middle school and highschool. learned ---- load of programming got my a+ cert freshemn year of highschool, i've knew a ---- load of languages, php, c, , perl javascript, delphi, vb(yuck like a mutherfuckah), bash, etc. Gone to the last 3 defcons, during highschool i did server management and at one time was running 7 servers and making some buck at it.

Then I bought a CRX...

I find working on computers ------- boring as ---- now. I'd much rather go for a drive in my crx than work on a computer.

if you venture off into the nix world, unless you're going to be running a server don't mess with openbsd. it is a good server os , but not very good with desktop unelss they have done a lot of work since 3.0-3.1ish that is when i lost interest. It is a pain in the ass to work video drivers in openbsd especially witha laptop, took me a few weeks to get it to work properly. but then it was cool.

If you want a decent desktop nix os, hit up slackware. it isn't as much bullshit has what redhat was or mandrake and it is a pretty straight forward flavor of nix.

But to the point of the topic, go and jack a copy of longhorn and be the only person on your block running it.

my votes:

Slackware

or

longhorn

Actually 95, 98 and ME are still GUI's running DOS, Microsoft's first real OS was 2000

Re:Which Windows to install?

Like another guy said you are not getting a deecent OS till you go to 200 NT. Anything from 2000 and upward will be more stable. So I would say 2000 NT, or XP pro. Do not use ME, that is a crappy OS, and if you are going to go XP, then do it right and get pro.

Put the crack pipe down and take another look at the screen.

Well, I installed Windows XP. Now I'm having problems with it :-\.. I'm in Safe Mode right now, because on normal bootup, it ends up sucking up all the memory the instant I open up any programs (instantly.. 5%ish and it jumps up to 100% :-X) Anyone want to help me out here? :-\
