Port ranges on a PS3 is 50 to the highest number allowed by your router. Mine is 65,503 while a buddies is 80,000. It depends on the brand of Router you have. Mine is a LinkSys. His is a D-Link.

ok so i got it to work with it directly on the modem but i dont want to have to take it off the router everytime just to play COD4. i still wanna know how to setup these port ranges

You set the port ranges inside the router. On mine you type in 192.168.1.1 in the internet search bar and it takes you to the router set-up. It should tell you in the manual that came with the router.
