Who's a business owner?

Alright I know some people on here own businesses. Tell us a little about it, how it got started, what you do, how much it grew etc...

I've been thinking about starting a machine shop, or some kind of business in manufacturing. Not right now but maybe in a few years.

i sell poorly made basemaps for turbo cars
i shrink my own market because everyone who buys one blows their engine and has to ride a bike
the first chip i sold covered the costs of every chip i ever bought +100
the second one covered the cost of my burner
the rest have paid for gas and tug jobs from 12yo at the big bowl buffet
it grows big, then i fire one out and its kinda small for a while

My old man and I design and build equipment that blows up plastic pipe.

He started it as a 'partnership' and panicked cause his partners sucked. I took over their part originally and moved operations into my folks garage/basement. Then we hired people little by little as needed.

It's grown to employ around 10 people at one time, now we cut back to 4 + a couple part timers.

leak testing some end caps before sending them for anodizing:

My family owns an independent insurance agency... it's been around for 20+ years, so it's fairly well established. That business is essentially my parents' retirement plan so they will still be drawing an income after they're done.

However, I do have big plans for the company when I'm calling the shots... mostly trimming alot of fat in the office (IE: getting rid of unnecessary personnel). Employees are usually the biggest expense for a small business. Surrounding yourself with the right people is key.

It's commercial trucking insurance (18 wheelers). We used to do personal lines and everything, but we just narrowed it down to what we know best. Who insures your work truck?
