Whoops, apparently 400hp/ft-lbs makes your transmission hate life.

I wish I had a good story for this but there isn't one, Sad thing is I wish there was because I was being nice to her and then this happened.

I was just leaving my friends house, not driving hard at all or anything. Stupid drivetrain starts making this shitty clunk/grind sound so I'm like WTFMATE???!

I pull over, call my friend up right away. I check the car for obvious ----, nothing is wrong. I get in and tell my friend Nick to just follow me back to my house (about 1mile away at this point)

We start going, and I'm only moving along about 5mph to keep things from getting fucked up. Well we keep truckin along, the sound isn't going away, or for that matter it is getting louder. We keep going and about 2 blocks from my house the car just locks the hell up. I was about 1" from hitting my head on the wheel it stopped so hard.

Well we tried to have my friend with a truck tow the car with it out of gear to no avail. It wouldn't budge

I thought it was the Tcase at first but I started to tear into her and found this.

My best guess would be that the gear got chipped slightly a week or two ago (I just started driving it again when this happened) and then I suddenly became a problem. Because I sure as hell wasn't driving hard when this all happened.

27psi on the stock motor/drivetrain for the win.

So at first I'm just like "put that nig up the the trailer, the H1 gots this ----"

http://www.posdsm.com/uploads/images...11_27Nov05.jpg

And then I'm just like "---- this stupid POS Galant"
http://www.posdsm.com/uploads/images...8Medium%29.jpg

Then Tom and I pulled this gay ass AWD transmission out (and of course you have to pull the subframe, axles, suspension, transfer case and a lot of other bullshit out too... but seeing this is like the 11ty billionth time we've done it goes pretty quick)

http://www.posdsm.com/uploads/images...8Medium%29.jpg

Hmmm.... WTF broken parts mate. :wtc: ----. That gear is supposed to have teef there. Not missin teef. Maybe I'll replace that ---- wif platnum like paul wall baby

http://www.posdsm.com/uploads/images...8Medium%29.jpg

So basically I disassembled the transmission to find out exaclty how bad the damage was :hs: Scratch off 2nd gear, and pretty much a lot of other parts. ---- is basically a complete loss

Hollur at chur boys.

That's like my WRX, I was doing 35 when all hell broke lose. But I wasn't making that much power.

Have fun with the build up. Looks like DSM's strike again :-* ;)

did they cover your tranny under warrenty or say you abused it.

Re: Whoops, apparently 400hp/ft-lbs makes your transmission hate life.

They never do. I did not even try, I know the mechanic at the dealer, and he told me they wouldn't. My car has a lot of modifications, and as soon as you do anything, even a BOV, they say you race your car so anything that happens it's a no. They might do it if the car is 100% stock.

Subaru Warranty sucks.

That sucks. If it's not one thing with cars, it's another, eh?

Jeff Shultz paid $875 or 950, not including shipping. The thing feels like silk and normal DSM guys don't like it because they can't feel it go into gear. When used GSR boxes are going for $700.... too expensive?

That is the only thing that scares me off AWD.Rarely it seems they can keep a tranny in one piece with lots of hp.Traction= broken trannys.

If it is the same 4g63 trans as the eclipse they go for $500.00 at my job plus shiping, here is there web site, http://www.jdmenginesinc.com/ just e-mail them and say Steven told you about them they might drop the price a little but they are really cheap.

Hot dam, thats a nice pile of metal in the tranny.
If those beef-cafe tranny are really only $900ish, Id ------- jump on it.
Regardless of if you keep it, or sell it, another stock unit is going to ---- itself. right?

I like the IC paint scheme.

The Shep tranny's are nice. I have a friend sending me a transmission out of his 92 talon awd. I'm going to use parts from his and parts from my old tranny, and then freshen it up with new synchro's, double cone/sychro 1-2 and then throw her back together. ;) Another stock tranny won't ---- itself. At least not for a while.

I was running a 50/50 mix of redline shockproof and GM synchromesh gear oils... I think i'm going to run strictly neo-heavyweight in her from now on instead. suprisingly with these tranny's the oil can have a lot to do with breakage.

And thanks, I love my intercooler :)

Re: Whoops, apparently 400hp/ft-lbs makes your transmission hate life.

that sucks; my friends 1g awd eclipse's tranny blew on him a while back

come to find out it was a JDM GVR4 transmission so the center diff was just tearing itself up with the different gear ratio's. He is rebuilding it with an eclipse/talon final drive, spool center diff, new(er) rear lsd, new cv's everywhere; and we're going to try to hook up the 4wd selector ---- that the japanese trannies had :)

damn. Id defintely go with teh shep tranny for teh price. Better than a gearspeed..

Like I said I already have a replacement on the way that I'm using to build a new one myself. Shep doesn't do anything magical or special that I can't do myself with the right info ;)

At some point they might start to turn it into a black art, but I'm certain the ~$900 unit is just a super-fresh OEM rebuild.

When Dave cracked open Jeff's transmission, after Jeff peeled off most of 2nd gear, it was a bunch of stock parts. Dave installed the beefy aftermarket steel shift forks and misc 2nd gear parts, transmission feels just like it did before.

I'm nearing 100% that it's fresh synchros + hubs, mated to fresh bearings for the main and counter shafts. I know most notchy shifting on Honduhs is caused by "good" yet slightly out of spec main + counter bearings. If you are just ---- about replacing a bunch of stuff, Shepherd-like results are to be expected.

Good luck with it!

Re: Whoops, apparently 400hp/ft-lbs makes your transmission hate life.

That's the most of it. His transmissions are just really well done rebuilds... with lots of options/upgrades.

You can get the:

evo steel shift forks
double synchro 1-2/3-4
double cone 1-2/3-4
GVR4 1st gear
Large input shaft from the 91's
Bigger/Revised synchros from the 93+'s
Heavy Duty shift rails
4 spider center diff
etc...

none of that stuff is special, it is just that Shep has been doing it forerever and will get the ---- right the first time. :)

Re: Whoops, apparently 400hp/ft-lbs makes your transmission hate life.

Only $5,000

But I absolutely won't go any lower. It is one hell of a deal to be honest. The new owner is a lucky bastard I've put a lot of TLC, upgrades, etc... into the car. Hell the new owner is getting a car with a freshly rebuilt tranny that I have in the mail right now too. ;D

yea my friend had him do all that ---- to his 2nd gen talon tranny and it ended up being like $2100 but he says its worth it and shep had it done pretty quick

Koby 11-29-2005 01:22 PM

Re: Whoops, apparently 400hp/ft-lbs makes your transmission hate life.

Exactly, Shep gets the ---- done fast and right. Hell you could do it yourself for maybe half the cost... but then you're probably not going to get everything right the first time, and it will take you a long ass time.

That's why I just picked up a entire new transmission/xfer case. It would run me more money to rebuild in time/parts for myself to do it. :-/

if you were running 11's id say your guess is close, but with that trap speed, im saying you have more around 300-340, no way any higher

Trap speeds on AWD are lower than FWD and RWD, even if the times are faster.

Not defending the guy completely because I don't know him or the car, but putting the point out there.

I hate to argue about this since it is ------- retarded, but pull up any of the so called "horsepower calculators"

Put in my cars race weight with me in it 3510lbs and then my ET and Trap speeds. If it needs a 60ft I usually cut 1.68-1.72.

You don't realize this is big ------- heavy car it isn't some stipped out butt------- honda crx that weighs 1800lbs. I have a nice stereo, power steering, cruise control, anti-lock breaks, air conditioning, leather interior, etc...
