Don't even let my Dad hear that. He'd agree and then NEVER buy another filter again. He <3 Brake Cleaner.

I had a fliter like that on my 88 Fiero it sucked. It was so messy especially cause I had to grab the little tab at the end of the filter with pliers and pull so oil pretty much went everywhere

God, I think changing the whole engine would be easier. Farking Germans.

On my little POS escort it takes all of 5 minutes and a 15mm sucket. you dont even have to lay down to do it, One knee on the ground,to loosen the plug and the filter can be reached from above the engine.

Don't ever think of changing the timing chains on a VR6, what a nightmare, the pisser is that the real problem isn't in the chains, it's in the guides falling apart and than causing it to jump time and well you all know the rest. I mean come on you shouldn't have to pull a tranny to get to the timing belt/chain on a car.

I own an MKIII VR6 and an oil change is cake. Spark plugs were kinda difficult cause of how deep down they are, but still wasn't bad once I got the hang of it. Jack the front of the car up, use an appropriate sized Hex bit (allen wrench/key type thing) to loosen the drain plug on the filter housing (you'll see what I'm talking about, I think it's 7mm but I can't remember off the top of my head). This will make life less messy, however, a problem I had is that my drain plug for the filter housing was stripped so I took the whole filter housing cap off without draining and got oil everywhere.

Putting the filter in is not hard at all, just make sure you have the right filter (early 95's had metal filters, you should have no problem finding the right one, autozone carries them). The filter will only fit well one way, I mean I guess you could force it in the wrong way, but worse comes to worse all ya gotta do is remember the way the old filter was facing. Also, make sure you put the new o-ring around the housing cap in the right place, I didn't put it on there just right and started the car up and oil was dripping pretty fast from the housing. Filling it up fully takes about 5-6 quarts of oil, the oil hungry bastard.

Draining oil from the pan is the same as any other car.

Also that article you posted is for an MK4 VR6, which is a completely different engine (the 24 v one), MK3 VR6's were only 12v

Check to make sure they carry the filter, I have, like you, discovered it CAN be much cheaper to have a quick lube type place do the job for you, but the ones where I live don't carry VR6 filters so I either have to bring one to them or do it myself, which I just end up doing it myself.

If, in this case, it'd be cheaper to have a quick lube place do the change for him, personally I think it makes perfect sense. There are much better things you could spend your time doing to a car then an oil change anyway.
