"whine" sound from engine....

quick questions.....

i recently have been through a couple tranny's (automatic's) and put on a on a high stall torque converter (4000 rpm!) when i replaced the stock tranny.

well anyway, as soon as i put on the converter there happens to be a VERY LOUD "whine" whenever i give it a good amount of throttle and the sound fluctuates with the rpm but it only does it under heavy accelration but NOT EVERY time, but i would say 80% of the time this happens.

i chalked it up as a bad tranny and put in another newer one (3rd tranny) with about 20k miles on it and it still does it.

so i was thinking MAYBE turbo? but it never did it until i put the converter on and replaced the tranny a couple times.

has ANYONE had anything similar occur with the turbo making a good awful whine sound?

it almost sounds like a supercharger but 100x louder.

dustin had this problem, i think.

turned out to have chips and stuff in his compressor wheel and the turbo was done.

Re: "whine" sound from engine....

brand new Tial Sport 38mm 9 psi, pretty sure thats not it.

it could possibly be the turbo, but the only things i have changed is the tranny and torque converter. i replaced the tranny thinking that that was the problem because i had just put it in, so i put in newer one that worked flawlessly before it was removed from the donor car. so i know its not the tranny.

and the turbo was fine before the first tranny swap, it does have a couple very small "nicks" in the blades, but they have been there for a LONG time.

and it doesnt sound like a whistle sound which is what i would think it would be if it were the turbo fins and it would do it all the time wouldnt it?

Had the same problem.
On one car it turned out to be the compresor wheel touching the housing.
On another it turned out to be a small air leak. That got really loud as the boost climbed. Look for an air leak. in the hosing.

Re: "whine" sound from engine....

well, the wheel does have some bit of play up/down/side but not in/out.

so it COULD be that.

i have been wanting to replace the center housing or just the whole damn turbo alltogether.

but last time i checked, the shaft play was minimal and didnt the wheel didnt touch the housing, but it could be as it spins.

but it doesnt do it all the time, just most of the time.

as for the loudness, its the same "loudness" everytime, the actual sound itself changes as the rpms go up/down and only under hard acceleration.

and the housing is sealed, no leaks.

Re: "whine" sound from engine....

Sorry to say this but the only way your going to know for sure is pulling the turbo and looking for scratches where the wheel may have touched.
Grabing the wheel and checking at 0 RPM is one thing when she spins up its another.
The leak can be anywhere. From the compresor outlet to the manifold.
Easy way to chk. Cover the inlet with your hand engine should die. Any leak and you will hear it.

no visual signs, but its kinda hard to shove my head down into my engine bay, lol ;D

and the car does stumble/dies if i put my hand on the inlet of the compressor.

Re: "whine" sound from engine....

my dads car does that. his turbo has shaft play like a mofo.

Re: "whine" sound from engine....

well, im pretty sure it was the high stall torgue converter.

i removed it last night and put the stock one back on and all is well.

i also looked at the turbo inlet and there was one minor scratch on the inlet portion. took my dremel and cleaned it up but nothing major done to it.

pulls hard and no more funny whine sound.

Re: "whine" sound from engine....

good deal...now all you need is a manual transmission and you're good to go.

Re: "whine" sound from engine....

manuals never came on my car, 1996 monte carlo.

so i would have to retro fit an older 5spd into my car. plus, thee is a very little aftermarket for the 3 tranny's i could put in, and im not exactly sure how well they will handle the power im looking to get out of the engine and turbo. the auto tranny can easily be built to handle the power.

im hoping for 350 whp and 425 wtq on 12psi on pump gas

Re: "whine" sound from engine....

ahhh i see a monte huh sweet id try a tougher automatic trans like a 700-r4 they were used on turbo cars from GM all the time like the syclone and the typhoon

Re: "whine" sound from engine....

depending on the monte you have what engine you have should i say they make a bitchin trans for that engine if you feel like saveing a couple of bucks go to the junk yard and get a trans and rebuild it

Re: "whine" sound from engine....

do you have a 3100 or a 3800? and i suppose you have checked all the belts and everything right?

germ 04-17-2005 03:25 PM

Re: "whine" sound from engine....

i cant use the 700r4 because thats a RWD tranny. the 95+ montes are FWD

the tranny that i have is the 4t60e tranny

the car came originally with the 3100 but i put in a 3400 from a 2002 grand am gt and then put in the tubo and then put the newest tranny with 20k miles on it. it only cost 150 bux so i think thats pretty cheap for what it is.

Re: "whine" sound from engine....

if you want to check it out i think its www.hewland.com they make raceing transmissions for fwd cars from drag cars to touring cars to rally cars its worth a look i suppose if you want a race trans

germ 04-19-2005 09:00 AM

Re: "whine" sound from engine....

thanks for the link but there are only 2 places i would get a race trans from, www.zzperformance.com or build it myself.

the last time i sourced out parts from someone that was "good with xxxx" i ending up not having a very good result

the torque converter company that made my converter is VERY well known and the guy said that he can do it, but he hasnt done one before.

and as you can see by my previous posts, the coverter didnt work out as advertised and now the guy wants to bullshit around and try to make excuses as to why its not working for me and try to say that its my fault!

so thanks again for the link, but i dont think they would make a race tranny for less than $1500 and thats what the race tranny from zzperformance.com costs.

Re: "whine" sound from engine....

ahhh i see got ya yea hewland is very expensive they make specalty transmissions not race versions of stock transmission lol
