GM and Dodge are doin it the right way.

GM is pushing the new ecotec i4 motors to be the "new age" chevy small block. they will be a million of them and they will come in lots of different cars/trucks and have lots of different configs

dodge the same with the 2.4l turbo motor in the srt4/turbo pt cruiser and all the NA 2.4l engines

keepin ---- basically the same lowers cost and helps out enthusiasts

I was just reading about the new Civic SI's the other day... and here's why they are bashing on the new SI's.
Compared to the 99-00 SI's, the new SI's are slower 0-60 by almost a full second.

"For VTEC aficionados, the '02 Civic Si, which is the only American-model Civic to use the three-door body, will take some getting used to. Acura Integra GS-Rs and Type-Rs, Honda Preludes, and the most recent Si have conditioned us to expect certain things, such as a furious rush of power and mechanized adrenaline as the VTEC system switches to the big cam lobes for high-rpm operation.

The new 2.0-liter doesn't do that. Apparently, Honda has sided with critics bothered by the high, narrow power band of the old engines. The redline in this one is down to 6800 from 8000 in the old engine, but torque is increased by 20 percent to 132 pound-feet, peaking at 5000 rpm. As is the rest of the car, the engine is tuned for easy real-world use with a linear power delivery throughout the rev range. This is generally an admirable approach but the unintended consequence is that the new Si is slower to 60 mph by almost a full second than the quickest '99-to-'00 model we tested. Yes, it carries 156 more pounds than did the old model, but it's nonetheless disappointing." -Car and Driver http://www.caranddriver.com/article....&page_number=3
The super Si is only in US in other part of the world its a little bit diferent it calls Type-r
Can it get any better than this?
We couldn't resist it. All that technology, all those years of racing experience. We simply had to put it into a road car. The result? Soaring revs, kick-in-the-back acceleration and an engine note to set your scalp prickling. In other words, the Civic Type-R.

With the Type-R you don't just get good looks, you get aerodynamic perfection to match. From 17" alloys, full body kit, door-mounted indicators and upgraded projector-style headlamps, it's all fast and very slippery. Hear some wind noise from somewhere? Didn't think so, we added extra insulation to help keep it out.

Of course, our Formula 1 experience came in rather handy. A lightweight flywheel and 197 bhp means the 2.0-litre i-VTEC engine gets to 60mph in just 6.6 seconds. That's enough to leave all our competitors - including the turbocharged ones - standing. It also helped us win 2003 Best Hot Hatch awards from What Car? magazine and BBC Top Gear.

And what did we put with such a great engine? Underneath: a six-speed gearbox, race-tuned chassis, exhaust and braking systems - the kind of things that make you want to go driving for no reason. And inside: alcantara seats, a red-stitched Momo steering wheel and a limited-edition serial number.

But why all this attention to the inside? Isn't the Type-R all about what's under the bonnet? True, but driving position, steering, gearshift, instruments - they've all got to be as outstanding as the technology they're connected to. Fortunately for the Type-R, they are.

the new Si's Vtec is different then the old style 0-5500rpm low lobe 5500-8200 high lobe idea. If memory serves me correct here i remember the Civic k20a3 has intake only high lobes that come on at like 2300rpm. the RSX-s has a k20a2 with the traditional in/ex vtec lobes at 4500rpm
(which is why the rsx-s has a 8k redline too )

I think its pretty much a foregone conclusion the Civic Si is a dead duck (again) soon. There are 3 of them that have been (I ---- you not) sitting on the dealers lot for a YEAR now and the dealer told me if/when he ever sells these 'sons of bitches' he will never order another one. The RSX is selling pretty shitty too... wouldnt suprise me if they yanked that car.

I think Hondas made it pretty clear to everyone they're more interested in hugging trees and selling homosexual cars like the Element. The fact they have no plans for a turbocharged sport-compact doesnt even put them in the same league as Mitsubishi, Dodge etc.

The bottom line is most people do NOT modify cars. They buy a car, drive it stock or maybe add a couple 10 minute bolt-on's and call it good. So if you're in the market for a sport-compact class car, the Honda/Acura offerings just leave too much to desire IMO. That includes price point.. they're priced pretty high for such a boring car.

I want a K series in my 95 DX someday, but the motors might be very hard to find and at the very least cost prohibitive when the time comes

I like the rear of the new Si's (canadian SiR's) a lot, but I hate the headlights, makes the car look like a mini van.
