where to get steel mesh for HMT project (air filter)

so I'm talking to Antoine on his HMT accord project (which btw is 95% complete, I checked it out and it's nice).

He wanted to know about an air filter, a simple temp setup until he finds a nice K&N off ebay. I suggested either a wire screen or a mesh setup.

Where the hell do you find the wire mesh screen that would be suitable to use with a zip tie over the intake pipe?

thanks. -ryan

99 cent stores. It's the strainer for noodles or something. :D

Re:where to get steel mesh for HMT project (air filter)

I thought there was more "mesh" involved.. like some paper plus steel combo.

I can use the basic wire grid as an alternative but I wanted something a little bit more... protective?

you know, so ants don't crawl into the turbo and ----. :)

hey Pat, I know hat you're talking about but I want something a little bit more "screening" then that. I know I can just sacrafice one of my food strainers but I wanted something with a paper content.

We may end up going with just the basic metal screen but I want to explore all options first. I told Antoine I would get back to him on this, hopefully we will upload some pics soon ;)

Re:where to get steel mesh for HMT project (air filter)

you mean like the mesh they use in a blitz SUS filter?

Re:where to get steel mesh for HMT project (air filter)

just get that ---- they put over gutters or something. know what I mean, that gutter guard ----. its cheap, and I think it would work. You can get it in various sizes and patterns, so you should be able to find something.

Re:where to get steel mesh for HMT project (air filter)

go buy an APCrap air filter for like 18 dollars at autozone. or take 2 screens and put a coffee filter inbewteen them. is it realy that hard to fabricate a filter master fabricater. only you know what you want so you should probebly go ask yourself how to make it.

Re:where to get steel mesh for HMT project (air filter)

you cant really expect to make a filter that will clamp onto the comp housing out of a screen and paper, there wont be enough surface area imo. Thats why real filters have so many folds.

Re:where to get steel mesh for HMT project (air filter)

if you care that much just get a rea filter, why bother with the rest of it?

My bad I guess I should have read the post a little closer. I really just wanted to post that link to my food strainer thread anyways though. ;D

Re:where to get steel mesh for HMT project (air filter)

I think we might just go with a basic screen design for the mean time. For some reason I thought there was something more to go with.. guess I was wrong.

Thanks to all for the replies, I'll let Antoine know tomorrow what ya'll came up with :)

Re:where to get steel mesh for HMT project (air filter)

I may be way off base, so I apologize, but...

Try a pet store...the screen that is used for aquarium/reptile living habitats seems to be what i think your looking for. The stuff used for the top, to keep the critters in.

Very, very fine, without restricting airflow too much i would think.

Again, hopefully im not too far off.

Just go buy a filter off of eBay for like 5 bucks since they also have those blitz knockoffs also.

yeah he is planning on ordering a K&N but we need a temp fix. I'll run it by him next time I see him online and get back to this thread.

thanks again.

Re:where to get steel mesh for HMT project (air filter)

I use screen door mesh, My sister was throwing out her screen door because the cat put some holes in it, so I cut out the whole thing and saved it, I've used it several times, and still have 6x6 feet of this ---- left, ha ha.

I'm sure any local hardware store sells repair kits.

Jeff

Re:where to get steel mesh for HMT project (air filter)

Two of these

Line the inside of one with gauze, and stack the other one on the inside so that way the car wont suck the gauze in. Now, you have a long penis looking thing that has more surface area than just a screen

Re:where to get steel mesh for HMT project (air filter)

that last link didn't work man ???

oh yeah jeff, didn't you know that you can repair (most) screen doors? Can buy the replacement screens and this rubber cord ----, then use this little wheel tool to throw them back together.

preciate guys, i'm antoine by the way. I managed to beat up a couple of pipes and call it an intake tho. I also managed to fit my Weapon R air filter right underneath the battery tray, above the front crossmember and in front of the tranny. I'll post pix a little later just remind me if i don't get back to the thread...once again preciate all the responses and i'll pass the info to others on the HMT intake filter

I got this shirt, and I can hold water or any other liquid in the pocket. It still breathes, but it's completely water tight. Protection from moisture! Gimme a price.

Re:where to get steel mesh for HMT project (air filter)

that just somehow sounds restricting.. we just want something temporary until a real filter can be fit on but I think he said he already got a filter on there... now me and him need to goto a metal supply yard and get some sheet metal for protection.

kick ass man.

as soon as this fucked up storm passes by we can go ahead and hit up a metal yeard and find a nice piece of sheet metal and throw that ---- together.. i wish i had my rivet gun laying around here but it's back home. Let me know.
