http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA280_.jpg
i'm asking if you guys know where i can go and buy one, besides the snap on truck. or where i can rent one. or any good ideas on how to get the valve springs off a dohc zc without taking off the head.

i know one of you cheap bastards has made one of these before. so please help.

Make one like this out of some flat metal and a old socket or whatever.

+1 the snap on one sucks dick for reinstallation but it works good for getting it apart.

Re: where can i get a valve spring compressor for dual cam honda heads...

i just read about using the zipties to do it.
you use a lighter to heat them up to get the zipties off.
do you think it would work?
i'm good at ------- ---- up. i really don't want to drop a valve inside the head.

saw this on harborfreight.com. looks like it might be long enough to work right.

only $10 to figure out if it works.

Re: where can i get a valve spring compressor for dual cam honda heads...

ok i have done a few toyota heads that have springs that are exposed like the ones in that ebay ad, i use a long vice grips like this one
http://www.factsfacts.com/MyHomeRepa...NeedleNose.jpg
then i grab on to the retainer, right on the edge of it using the first 1 or 2 teeth on the vice grips
then i just push down and use a magnet to pull the collets out
reinstallation is similiar
i take the collets and put a little grease on them and then push down the spring with the vice grips and just stick the collets to the locks in the valves and then let the spring out
ive seen you pictures so i know your a big guy and you will have no problem doing this.

get a 12" c-clamp, and weld a 1/2" washer with some spacers onto one end so you can get your retainers out and back on

Doubt it
havn't you noticed he is good for throwing out half an idea, then great at falling short with how his idea will actually function.

i have a snap on/blue point one, ive done like 5 heads 4 b series and 1 dsm it took me under an hr to do all new valve springs and retainers, they work fine when you can set them up right, also i put a rag under the cly im using. havent used myn in a couple months but deff worth the money, u can do it by yourself no effort. its the one one ive seen work that well with a dohc head. might sell it since i dont use it anymore :l

Well you need a valve spring compressor. That is what it is and you take the part on the left, stick it under the valve. Then you take the other end with the parts cut out and put it on the retainer. After that you take the little black handle and push it. That compresses the valve for you.

Either that or you can pleasure yourself anally with it. It's up to you.

The copy of the snap on units comes with fittings for compressed air into the cylinders has well. I have alwyas pulled the head to do valve springs. But with the compressed air and the copy snap on unit you should be sold. Make sure to cover up any holes etc has a keeper is bound to fall into something its not. Also be very careful has keepers are a bitch to keep track off. A magnetic tray will be a nice tool to have while doing the job has well.

steering wheel pullers have long slots (on the 2-bolt style, not so much on the 3) thatll let you line up your bolts. you should know how a steering wheel puller works, so i don't need to explain how to set it up, i hope. you cut windows into the socket so you can use needlenose (not fingers) to put in/take out the retainers. when you tighten in the main puller bolt, it acts like a spring compressor, pushing the socket down on the retainer, letting your clips come loose. might have to give the valvestem a slight tap to break it free so they dont fly loose and go all over. lets you do the work on the head while its in the car.

Re: where can i get a valve spring compressor for dual cam honda heads...

alright i'm in the process of doing it. i'm half way done.
i'm using a 15mm socket and a hammer to get them off.
using the zip ties to compress the springs and cutting the zipties off. my wife is helping me get the keepers back in cause i have sausage fingers. so far so good... :l

briggs and stratton keepers are like $.90 and look to be the same size. it's not a rocket science to find one thatll fit

I have tons of stock keepers if you do run into needing some. Cover a stamp+ a tall can

Re: where can i get a valve spring compressor for dual cam honda heads...

those little fuckers like to fly don't they.

well i'm all done. the guy is coming to pick up the car tomorrow night. that is the last time i do valve anything for free. well it wasn't really free. he offered me my asking price for the car if i put the new seals in and he gave me $50 for the seals.

first time taking spring out with the head on the car. wasn't that bad, but the air compressor kept turning on and scaring the ---- out of me.

oh and i get all done and i have one valve seal left over...
---- THAT ----
i forgot to put it in the 7th one i did. took the old seal out and put the spring/retainer back on.
so pissed off.
no more smoke and smelling like ass. ran good, pulled great. i'm gonna take it for one last ripper tomorrow to make sure it's running right before it picks it up >:D

I've never done a DOHC, but the same tool worked fine on an SOHC. I used the end of a compression tester, with the schrader valve removed, to pressurize the cylinder and keep the vales up and closed while I changed the seals. Ground some needle nose vise grips to remove the seals.

Re: where can i get a valve spring compressor for dual cam honda heads...

the main problem with the dual cams is the springs are too close to the walls that you can't really get any tools in there. i had a hard time cutting the zipties off of a few of them.

The china chang bong copy of the snap on is like 60 bucks shipped. Its even worse with dohc vtec heads. Also with aftermarket springs you really need some extra torgue to get those bitches in.

yeah i was gonna buy the copy of the snap on one, but i needed this car done by today and i had someone that was letting me borrow his snap on one. he flaked on me and left me with 3 days to get the job done with no tools.

what a friend. If you plan on doing them again the snap on copy works well but an extra set of hands still helps with those damn keepers.
