Re:Whats Your Style of Junkyard Part Picking??

I've always thought about just ganking a bunch of stuff from my local u-pull-it but could never justify the risk for a few random parts, (plus if I actually found a good turbo or intercooler, they go for like $30, all fixed rates). So I always just throw my stuff in the wheel barrow and pull it up to the counter, and they never charge me for half the stuff anyway. The last 2 times I went there I made out pretty well.

$78 for:
4th gen fender -perfect
4th gen headlight
injector resistor box
5th gen fuel rail w/regulator
5th gen injectors w/ wire harness
mx6 injector clips
miscellanious hardware and stuff.

$38 for:
2 spares (for drifting, both new)
6 injector resistor boxes
mx6 window switch
4th gen tilt steering column (supposed to be $28 alone)

The prices I paid included tax. The guy on the last one just put - misc. electrical - $8 for all the injector resistor boxes and the window switch!

When we go I just pick a really busted up car in the back of the lot and bust it up further. My personal signature is throwing axles through windshields. 8)

Re:Whats Your Style of Junkyard Part Picking??

Im like a combo of 1 and 4

I usually pre scan the yard w/o tools, that way I can walk in later w/o them noticing a nice tool box/tool set.
I sit down and plan out how to remove stuff.

But my tools always include a small hack saw (for hoses) and a large 27oz hammer with a small prybar. I really calmly hack through everything. Id take my portable sawsall but I dont want the yard to know I have the $$ for a sawsall...(Ive found the better you look in the yard the more $$ you pay)

But for some reason all the yards here in the Seattle area are like total ripoffs. They want like 30-40% of what the part was brand new...

I was quoted once 400$ for seats out of a 91 prelude! I asked for 150$ and he laughed at me, and I laughed at him back and left...

Yeah, i can't believe that crap some of these yards give you. I got qoated $125 for a rusted up std manifold that was cracked. I was like, "Buddy, the peice of ---- is cracked and YOU still want 125!?. He then said for 175 i'll give you one that isn't cracked. I just told him this place is a joke, and left.

Actually some places are down right dangerous! I went to a smaller yard, and i asked the guy if i could look around. The guy really didn't give a ---- and let me through the gates. I'm there all by myself and theres like no one else in the yard. I'm like, "ok i'll just take my time and wonder around. After going pretty far in i notice 2 ------- giant german shepards roaming around. I'm like," Holy ----!! Now i was kinda scared because this yard wasn't a u-pull it style yard, and probly the owners normally just walked around...and i was like a stranger to the dogs. Those dogs could have ripped my balls off 5 times over if they wanted to. Naturally, I was out of the yard in less then a min. :-\ :P

Its the yards that have multiple cars stacked up ontop of each other that scare me, a local pick n pull does this, scary as hell. Theres a really nice on, j and b's, HUGE, but empty, looked for obd1 injector clips in the J&B's, non, went next door to a small one, snagged two sets, anyone need one, lol.

I'm #3. I usually only look for thunderbird turbo's since the fixed price here (So. Ca.) is $80 for a turbo. :o It's fucken rediculous but if you can find a good one, it's ok. I like throwing alternators through the window, though. ;D

im usually a 1 or 2, i have found my self in a couple 3's when i see a #4 i keep looking for other ----...

the last time i pulled a turbo (SAAB) it almost turned out to be a 3, was starting to look bad!
last time i pulled a MX6/626 turbo was like a 1, but i thought i was going to have to fight two old russian guys for it, turns out they only wanted the tranny so it was all good...

---- i wouldnt do #4 unless there was a new in the box 61-1 hidin back there, i have had nothing but bad experiences with junkyard turbos, and with prices going up i would rather save the time and get a new one.

hah, that was a great story... maybe I missed it.. but what kinda turbo was it? Chrysler K car kicking your ass? those turbos are a pain, I've took a few off and got a bit too dirty, I go for the easy ones. I flat rate ---- at the junkyard just like I do at work ;)
