Only ones I can think of are the older Ford Probes and Mazda 626's. Their 12 valve 2.2's \

Exact same engine. Just says Ford.

I dont remember Exp's having an intercooler.

Re: whats this engine

What about the Mustang and Thunderbird 4cyl Turbo engine. 2.3L with a decent sized turbo.

Intercooled or not? I don't know...

Re: whats this engine

if its the motor im thinking of, it came from a 1989-1992 Ford GT probe, its a 12 valve sohc 2.2L turbo

my buddy is finding one to swap into his mazda so i did some research on them for him a couple weeks back

Tom-Guy 03-01-2006 06:12 PM

Re: whats this engine

Probe is a mazda engine. 2.3 is not 3 valves per cyl. That leaves the exp which is not the same as anything else mentioned, but it does have same bolt pattern as 1.9 and 2.3

im not, my buddy wants somethin to go semi fast for cheap for now, and for him that's a good starter motor

it has 7.8:1 stock, swap a new turbo, get a good intercooler and fuel system and that should be good for at least a few months of fun with some decent boost untill it blows and gets his new motor built

Tom-Guy 03-01-2006 09:11 PM

Re: whats this engine

93+ Escort and 323 are essentially the same chassis. Some of the mounts may be off, BUT I know the upper radiator support in the early 90's is the exact same piece - had a neighbor used to fix salvage vehicles for resale.

If you can fit the 1.9 HO transmission you can run a 2.3T, but it's heavy and you have to cut + box the frame rail due to length. No comment on transmission life.

theres guys out there with T3/T4's hanging off of them and running 15+ psi, only to pray to break 200whp (no joke). The best they can pull is low 14's with suspension, bigger fmic, fuel mods.......those motors are a complete waste. They barely have an aftermarket so everything has to be custom=expensive. The only engine management that half ass works on them is megasquirt. If your buddy wants a good platform, I suggest he look into the FE3 ;)

PS- Tell him to read up on Probetalk.com or MX6.com those sites have plenty of info

like i said he wants something cheap while he builds his next motor, it'll be fine for a motor to beat on untill then

My bro-in-law had one, stock turbo/intercooler/well pretty much anything, Homemade boost controller and open pipe, he ran 14.3 @15psi.

There was another guy with one, minor mods, fuel a big t3/t4, I don't know all the specs, but he ran low 13's all day.

So they aren't the best but if you know what you are doing, you can get decent power out of them, and I mean decent for a daily driver that can at least spank 80% of the civics on the road, and goes vroooooom,,psssssst,, :-\

they are few a far between..........There are guys trying to run GT35R's on them and cant get them to spool on that 2.2L :X. Ive seen the GT35R on 1.8 liter honda spoil well before vtec (this is using the .63ar exhaust housing on both engines)

Re: whats this engine

I don't know, All engines are different, even with the same specs. But I was pretty impressed with this guy after he ran that low 13 pass. I was at the track kinda knew the guy from before.

I loved it because the car looked like ----, but was pretty quick. for an MX-6
