Whats the Deal with the Site?!?!?

I am sure a lot of you guys want to know.. in fact I just found out last night.. The CTO of my web server has informed me that this website with all the large pics & forum has caused other sites on his server to slow down and be very sluggish. The site is growing rapidly and is getting a bit bigger than I anticipated. He recommended that we move to a dedicated server.. Which is way out of my price range. I am not to sure what we are going to do at the moment, If I am going to be switching to a dedicated server I will need to get some serious funds coming into support it (as in advertising). Bandwidth isn’t the biggest issue I don’t think right now. Its mainly the software we are using for the forums. The software has been updated to put less of a load on the server, and we are being monitored by my host. So we are going to see how it works out.

Any suggestions or inputs would be appreciated,

thanks
Jeff Frank

How much is the dedicated server option? If I buy this house im going to try to get a T1 here and I may be able to let you host your stuff here on its own little machine.

Re:Whats the Deal with the Site?!?!?

donations are nice.. but I need some good advertising..

We may just try some new forum software if this doesnt work out.. If the problem still continues... the forums are gone guys.. sorry

Did you have to restore the forums from a backup? Because of the newer messages are missing now :-\

P.S. HMT won't be the same without the forums.. it would be like you guys installing a turbo then having to rip it back off and go straight NA! ???

Re:Whats the Deal with the Site?!?!?

Well, might I suggest a few good forum's...

there's the FUDForum, (not bad)
I run that one http://fud.prohost.org/

another good one is the tForum
http://www.tforumhacks.com/
I used to run this on my Old site..

and if you wanna break it down to the Old-Skool...
"WWWboard" from Matt's Script Archive
http://www.scriptarchive.com/wwwboard.html

the WWWboard is what they run on the http://crx.honda-perf.org/ forum..

it uses Flat HTML files generated by a Perl Script.
It doesn't use a Database, so it's a *LOT* less taxing than a PHP/MySQL Database Forum on a webserver.

The problem with PERL is the bandwith usage will double and push him well over his limit :(

Whan we post a pic here does it get saved on ther server? Is it actually the forum that causes the bandwith consumtion? I say turn off some feature's if they are not friendly.

Re:Whats the Deal with the Site?!?!?

Pictures and stuff like that are bandwith issues, which really isnt the big problem, its the forum, with multipule users on at once that is slowing the server down.

I dont know if you guys have noticed but the site is running extremely fast right now, since we are on a dedicated server (lock out box)

Plus the forum software seems to be a bit smoother.

That upgraded forum software will help a ton...I will be suprised if you are using too much resource wise now.

abaz i would get in toutch with tons of people who own shops you might have to make another forum for sales they be haveing or something but i'm sure you could get a lot of them to give up $50 or $100 a month for the advertising. try Will at exospeed.

I disagree Nothing today can beat the efficiancy of php accessing an sql database through an apache server.
bit for bit nothing can touch this. It is the thinnest pipe ever. much better then even .asp..

I code this stuff everyday!

Re:Whats the Deal with the Site?!?!?

I say have a fundraiser. Tons of people wanted t-shirts and bumper stickers. I would be willing to take care getting the t-shirts made and selling them if someone can come up with the design. You can buy them for cheap as hell and make a big profit.

Honda16hb 02-20-2003 10:19 PM

Re:Whats the Deal with the Site?!?!?

for t-shirts: I think it would be cool to have jeff and beau's avatars on them, that way they can be with us all the time. I'd be willing to wear a brown skirt and sell cookies from a wagon if it would keep these forums up.

Honda16hb 02-20-2003 10:54 PM

Re:Whats the Deal with the Site?!?!?

I just looked at beau's avatar, you could probably photo shop the hell out of his and jeff's and make it look like jeff's big black head is on beau's little white body.

BoostedBSeries 02-26-2003 01:00 AM

Re:Whats the Deal with the Site?!?!?

i really think that the t-shirt idea is a great idea, or just make some stickers that have the site name on it. i used to surf around to like 6 different forums, but this is my home now. i love this site. all my buddys used to make fun of me for my old "ghetto" turbo setup. little did i know that there was this group of guys that were doing the same thing. these forums cant go away, this is where i found my CRX, where i learned how to make a turbo kit the (right) wrong way. also, i would KILL for a t-shirt with jeff and beau's avatars on them just two big pics that said homemadeturbo.com under it just enough for people to go "WTF?" and have to go home and fire up the site. i would wear the hell outa that shirt. if you decide to make the shirts, ill be the 1st to buy. i love this site.

Re:Whats the Deal with the Site?!?!?

hehe, thanks brett. But I honestly dont know whats going to happen with the forums. TurboEF9 is working on something for us that may work out... I simply cannot afford this website, I dont make much myself, and this site isnt making any money either. Tshirts and stickers... well it has crossed my mind.

Re:Whats the Deal with the Site?!?!?

what about those ads that just run on the top inch of the page, that continuously change. they don't pop up so you don't have to click off five every time you open a page or two. its there at the top if you wanna look at them. my brother has info on ads that pay you to have them on their website. I can get some info from him.

What would monthly advertising cost on this site and what would it consist of? Banner advertising, online store - what'd you have in mind? Email me at customcoach@comcast.net and let me know.
