My fiance's mom has a '91 accord LX. she was on the freeway today doing about 80 and the engione just shut off on its own. No abnormal sounds, nor visible problems. any ideas?

it started right back up when she got it to the side of the freeway, and then she drove 80 miles home with no problems.
|
Re:what would make this happen?
BTW this apparently is the third time it has happened
|
Re:what would make this happen?
I think if the timing belt broke you'd know it. That would be accompanied by some "abnormal sounds".

maybe there is a short, or a bad ground somewhere. |
Re:what would make this happen?
^^^ that is what I'm figuring, I'm gonna go outside and check it over and see what I can find.

Re:what would make this happen?
the wierd thing is, she just told me that not only did the motor shut off, the whole car did. the electronics (dash lights/ turn signals/ radio/etc) all turned off when the key was still on. she then got the car off the freeway, turned the key off, and back on and drove away totally normal. I checked all the grounds they look normal. there was no check codes. Maybe main relay? it's as if there is a big breaker in the car that just shut off and she had to "reset" it. the wieredst part is, I just turned it on, and drove it and it was totally fine. WTF mate?

Re:what would make this happen?
Maybe she's lying to make her life sound exciting? :-\

Re:what would make this happen?
my old 92' civic hatch did the same thing and i had to replace the ecu. it started doing it more often so i got it diagnosed at it was the ecu.
|
Re:what would make this happen?
well its electrical, just stating the obvious... coil, IGNITER, ecu, mainrelay, all relays... it's "possible" that a wire has corroded and has an intermittent signal or whatever you wanna call it. but honda doesnt do things like that. my mom used to have a ford ranger, and if you put the steering wheel all the way down then the blinkers wouldnt work. It's electrical, even if its the fuel pump its electrical, and stop posting this ---- in general forums, i came to general NOT to help someone out.............................bitches.

Re:what would make this happen?
maybe the motor fell asleep ... tell her to start redlining the ---- ouf o the gears.
naw maybe the battery/alternator cable is fucked up and needs to be fixed nathan |
Re:what would make this happen?
I have seen that happen with a bad positive terminal and after so much load on the alternator it shuts off.. we couldnt figure out wtf it was.
|
Re:what would make this happen?
Nod, I'd start checking battery cables, alternator etc..
|
Re:what would make this happen?
she probly just hit the key by accident snd shut the car off :-\ hey its possible
|
Re:what would make this happen?
I'm gonna replace the battery cables and ground wires, I'll take the alternator off and get it tested too, just to be sure
