Re:what stupid stuff have u done working on ur car?

I had a 96 civic remade to look like a 99 civic. Headlights, bumpers, wing, and fenders. looked great. i bought those z3 fenders for short money maybe $100 for both of them.i put them on and took the other ones and threw them in the dumpster :-\. iI have to tell you that i really never got pulled over that much until i got those friggen z3 fenders. i got pulled over every day at least once. this went on for almost a month till i said ---- it i cant take it any more and went back to honda and bought the 99 fenders for $150 a piece. worst part is that i swore up and down i would never throw anything out any more and i did two years later on my dx to si swap i threw the dx harness in the trash and didnt relize what a dumb ---- move that was. especially when my old mans is like "maybe so should keep that harness, never know when you'll need it". i was like shut up old man. guess he showed me. :'(

When i was putting on new brake calipers, i torqed the bolt that holds the caliper on to much and broke the head of the bolt off. I drilled the broken bolt out then went to the dealership and ordered another one. Came in 2 days then i proceeded to put the new one on. I torqed it again TOO much and snapped it, then had to drill it out again. I was really pissed, i almost lost it >:(. So i went inside had a beer, calmed down, went back to the dealership the next day, ordered another bolt that took another 2 days to come in and finally fished putting the calipers in. Note to self, don't buy another peice of ---- torque wrench, and the haynes manual is WRONG. 36ft/pound for a Si is too much, it says 20 ft/pound for the hf,dx and that is actually the right spec...sigh :-\

i somehow managed to lose the two outer nuts for my exhaust manifold when i put my stock one back on. didn't put the heat shield on, so i noticed right away, it's not leaking or anything, i just have no idea where those nuts are, prolly on the highway somewhere :(

Installing my headers on the stand before dropping in motor I broke couple studs and got anxious and decided to fix when it was in the car. Once was in the car all bolted in and running realized I had to pull the motor back out cause I could not get a drill back between the firewall and head to fix. :1 :7

I did the same thing on my old S10. I've never thrown a tool farther than that prybar.

I have so much i can list
1. Have a resistor box that i take in every night so im working on my car 1 morning finishing up from the prev night so i go to start the car up wont start needless to say i spent 1 1/2 hours taking ---- off and inspecting rewiring this and that calling freinds asking what i may have fucked up then my girl comes downstairs and says Dont you need this box to start your car.

On the first civic i have ever owned i was playing with the white igniton box. while striping interior so by this time all the wiring is on the floor panel im hangin half out the Car.I hold my clutch with 1 hand twist the screwdriver with the other ---- starts up it cold so its idling at about 1800 hand comes off the clutch the car's in gear ------- thing drags me about 10 ft and threw a fence before i can rip the ebrake to stop it.

Also lowering the car onto the oil bucket. Kitty litter works great in these shitsuations.

not me being stupid but the guy i bought the car from

i buy this jetta or golf, whatever it was dude had just replaced the valve cover gasket with his buddy or somthing like that, i think they took way more ---- off then they needed too, because they disconnected spark plug wires from the distributor and a bunch of other ----. he got it back together and it never ran again. they tried to figure it out for who knows how long, then he gives up and puts it on craigslist for like $300

i buy it and tow it home. stare at the engine for a little bit. switch the plug wires back to the right order, it fires right up. they put the plug wires in the wrong order so the car wouldnt start or run :1

im sure i have alot of stories where i was at fault, i cant think of any good ones

Re: what stupid stuff have u done working on ur car?

This thread is great, lets keep it alive 8)

More than once I've left a ratchet on the crank pulley when starting, no major fuckups from that.

When I was real young working at an oil change place I pulled the radiator hose when the guy underneath the car downstairs was doing something with it, spilling hot coolant all over him. He swore and I laughed, guy was an ass anyways.

Doing my first engine swap in my civic swapping out the b7 for a z6 Ryan was up top maneuvering the engine in with the hoist and I was underneath trying to line up the rear tranny mount, I think we had the 2 side mounts bolted in loosely then I the rear mount wouldn't line up, I was trying to rock the engine while it was being lowered and all of the sudden there was a pop and blood was dripping on my face, it smashed my thumb and ripped out the whole nail and hurt like a bitch. I was pretty pale from the blood I lost. There's still a stain on my mom's garage floor.

Re: what stupid stuff have u done working on ur car?

umm lets see on the 88 camry the auto shifter broke and the car had no tach
so the car got stuck in "2" so i gangster wired it to fire up anyways where I would have to hold the brake with one foot, kick it into neutral with the other and touch some bare wire together with my hands. drove it in "2" for a good 4,000$ miles and eventually killed the motor from holding it at redline

realized later it was all because I jammed the wrong key into the shift interlock hole and broke it off :6

in the q45 I retardedly put a bulb from the fogs into the headlight or vice versa, and after doing one side correctly i was like wtf why wont it fit
so I jammed it in and broke shards all over inside the housing and never cleaned them out. pissed me off.

in the integra I forgot to pull away the jackstands and dropped the car off a jack. dented my doors/underbelly :1
first drive after my auto to manual swap I revved my motor that had never gone past 6400rpm to 7000rpm in 1st because I wanted to see where redline was. spun 2 bearings.

on the bmw I noticed that my wastegate didnt actually work and said ---- it, drove with redline limited boost until i unnecessarily blew my headgasket. continued to drive it for a couple thousand miles. it started to burn 1qt of oil every hundred miles, tried to go on a 300 mile trip and it burned all 6 quars in about 80 miles, engine oil pressure disappeared on the freeway and almost siezed up, knocked like crazy but I filled it up with 7 quarts of super tech and it's ok now. Left the oil cap off by accident so all the extra pressure shoots out of it, no more oil burning :1

a winner was in the freezing cold, like 5*F I had to replace a coolant hose on the bmw, so I did and topped off the car with water from a water bottle. Started and drove the car an hour or so later, overheated like mad. pulled over, the water had frozen and shattered my new hose :1

Re: what stupid stuff have u done working on ur car?

Hmm, what I did most recently was putting the intake manifold back on the LS1, i forgot to drop the rear 4 intake manifold bolts in ( they dont fit in place once the intake manifold is where its supposed to sit, so you put them in prior to fitting the intake manifold) and i put the intake manifold on, plugged in the connectors, then realized i forgot to put the bolts on. So i pull it out and in the process i rip the wires out of the MAP sensor right where they meet the plug, and in the process I break the oil pressure sensor. So i have to buy the oil pressure sensor and the socket $100 later I get that in. Then i have to re-pin the map plug with pins i stole form the old EGR crap, rewire it ALLLLL the way in the back of the engine, and put it all back in. Then when I goto the dyno I have the wires all sorts of fucked up, can't tune it, have to go home, buy a $200 scanner and fix it. Bring it back to the dyno, pay $500 and have it tuned. All that ------- money ontop of the H/c that cost $2500 :'(

dropped a valve down into a cylinder while doing a valve stem seals, ------- $30 air compressor couldnt supply enough pressure to keep the valves seated.
2 days later and a hemastat through the spark plug hole i got that bitch back in the hole.

never trust those air fittings in the spark plug holes, i always use a rope through the sparkplug hole now.

Was doing a clutch on a 150,000 mile insight at work and when i was trying to pry the trans of the motor i accidently tweaked the flexplate a little. I didnt notice slapped it back together and started car. It made a faint noise and then nothing cel pops on. I'm like wtf pull the trans see the flexplate made contact with sensors for the IMA and they were trash. Order new sensors, next day while I'm buttoning it up I start running bell housing bolts in with the clutch line pinched between motor and trans. Luckiliy it was ok. Advisor sold the job at 9.5 hrs and I would of had done in 1.5. :1

i got all you mofo's beat.

I was really into dirtbikes when i was younger. In 6th grade, I bought a 2 cylinder honda cl175. It had stripped out spark plug holes. So i said ---- it and Jb welded those bitches in. The bike was kinda slow, but one day it just took off like a rocket, and i heard "boom" and one of the plugs had "popped" out. It was shooting flames like a top fuel car, right past my legs, being about a mile from home and it was faster than it ever was, i said ---- it, moved my leg from harms way and proceeded to drive the rest of the way home like a parade on the chinese new year, i had made it all of maybe 300 ft, until the other one decided to let loose, and burn the hell outta my left leg, i dropped that pos as fast as i could and ran my little ass home to mommy.

cliffs,
jb weld and spark plugs=burnt dumbass ass 6th grader.

Re: what stupid stuff have u done working on ur car?

I thought i didn't have very many.. but after reading these a few good ones came to mind..

1. Had my crx jacked up on the left side with the left front wheel off... go to start working on it and the damn thing see-saws onto the front brake rotor...stock honda jack miraculously didnt kick out..so I go to the back of the car and lean on it..car comes back up. I then scramble to try and throw the damn wheel under the front of the car to stop it from tipping over again.

2. 1 week after I got my crx, my first honda, the notorious clutch switch "plug" crumbles to bits and the car leaves me stranded for two days till I figured it out. 11:30pm on a Sunday in a parking lot im under the dash feeling for something im not even sure exists and then wham, I touched it and the car proceeded to drag me hanging half out the car all the way across the lot, over a speedbump and up a curb.

3. While doing my y8 swap into my current 91' hatch im busy doing some wiring and so I ask my friend to torque the flywheel. The engine is hanging by the hoist so he cant get them torqued fully and tells me they'll need to be done on the ground to get them tight enough. So I finish a couple other small things and we end the day with the engine hanging there in front of the car. I come back the next day by myself and finish up, and install the engine etc etc. I totally forgot about the flywheel. SO I get the car all together, everything is peachy, except you cant run a y8 on a p28 because it runs like ass, but alas I drive it anyway.

So I drove it for about half a day and I did a couple high rpm pulls, and on one right after I let off I hear a high pitched ringing/scraping. I turn off onto a long street and diagnose..as it gets slightly worse, then turns into a vibration etc etc.. then the clutch starts to feel funny, then it wont come out of ------- gear. And since I killed the battery getting it started the day before I cant start it in gear. Car made HORRIBLE noises fro m the #4 piston area/tranny. I was so scared I spun a bearing. Turns out the flywheel bolts had backed out and began to press on the clutch plate. Every time I pushed the clutch they backed out farther, jacking the disc against the plate and keeping it engaged. It also munched the pilot bearing, had to pull the tranny back out the next day after a 6 day engine swap. SO much for on the 7th day he rested..

4. Also on that same engine swap I neglected to count the plugs from the "front" of the engine to the rear.. and instead counted left to right while looking at the engine in the car. Thats why my battery was dead the next day. Also why I didn't get the car running in time for the autocross the next morning..which is a good damn thing considering the flywheel fell off..

I tow cars alot! I get careless sometimes. So I was pulling this car out of like 50 feet of thick bushes that some girl drove into, I had it by the rear control arms. I was so lazy after the driverside big j-hook feel off I kept pulling, bad idea!

The passagerside hook slid all the way to the outside, I kept pulling, Car starts to drag out sideways then Boom!!!

The hook slid so far over and took such a big angle draging it that it grab the alloy wheel from the inside making a hole in the wheel not the tire

Got the car out told the girl she poped her tire. Charged the girl to change the tire

Re: what stupid stuff have u done working on ur car?

During my apprenticeship at a few transmission shops i did a few stupid things to say the least, i just cant remember most of it.

I remember i was starting to piss off my boss because every time we had a dodge with the crank sensor in the transmission bellhousing i would take it out putting the unit on the dowel pins, and they were worth about $200 our cost every time. I think i destroyed at least 8 or 9 of them untill i finally just sucked it up and spent a half hour removing and reinstalling the stupid sensor.

That or the times when it would take me 3-4 times to do a service because i would forget to put the filter in again and again.

I wasnt that bad though this other idiot we hired right out of college and had never turned a wrench made me look like a pro. He crashed our shop truck into a customer vehicle, crashed customer vehicles into hoists and ----. One time he drove a pickup off the side of the drive on hoist, luckily it was still on the ground, and he wanted to try to drive it back up onto it but it was never going to work, the tire wasnt tall enough so i told him to chill out or he's going to ---- things up even more. So i go off to grab a jack and some ---- to get it back on and the dumbfuck decides hes going to put it into reverse and stomp on it. Truck slides backwards, tire wont climb the rail just slides backwards alongside it and he puts the box of the truck into the hoist post crumpling the ---- out of it. Another time he almost pushed a truck off a hoist by opening the bay door and having it hit the back of the truck and i got to witness a 5000lb vehicle slide off the hoist points and amazingly catch on ---- like the gas tank and the floor pan and whatever. He didnt get fired though because he's the bosses buddy.

One old fucker we had working there was pulling a engine once and he had it too far to one end of the hoist, so the engine and tranny came out and the car did a backflip off the hoist.

We had a lot of fun there though, i rember one unit overheated and welded itself together, and we were trying to pull it into the shop so we hooked up the tow rope and he got in the shop truck, tries to pull away... thing wont budge so he gives it a foot of slack and steps into it a little, still nothing, then about 5 minutes later hes got both tires billowing smoke, people are starting to pour out into the parking lot to see whats going on, i dont think they were suprised though we did a lot of stupid ---- like that.

And theres been more than one occasion ive had customers come in to pick up a car and i say "You'll just have to hold on one sec, the boss is just test driving a vehicle right now mam" only to have him pull into the parking lot and for example pull a epic 4 wheel burnout in his neighbours 3500chev diesel he just chipped, into the parking stall sideways, hop out with smoke pouring off the box and walk up to the customer who is waiting outside to pick up their car.

The worst event though was probably when i put a 350sbc into a late 80's blazer, it was nice too, anyways so i put a brand new shift kitted 700r4 into this thing with the motor, and as soon as im done the boss gets his hands on it, probably less than a hour later we were down one set of rear tires and one transmission, he pulled so many burnouts driving around to the other shops in the area and showing it off to the other guys that the unit burnt up and lost 3rd and 4th or something, im amazed the cops didnt get his ass for that one. It was almost embarrasing how much of a child that guy was though.

Anyways I eventually got fired for getting completely wasted on my birthday, then having a buddys front diff bind up or something in the parking lot infront of the shop at 3am by pure coincidence, so ofcourse we opened it up and i had him pull it onto the hoist, yanked the front driveshaft and then proceded to pull another epic burnout in this thing that melted ruts in the concrete floor and left little bits of rubber everywhere, and unfortunately he showed up like 5 hours later at 9am sunday morning for some reason. Needless to say he wasnt that impressed, now he probably almost would have let it go but i went just a little too far, its ZC though i was turning into way too much of a drunk at that place anyways.

My worst:

I was too lazy when I wanted to unload an f series engine. My engine hoist was burried at the other end of a 4 stall garage that was cluttered with palets of machined parts for work. I decided it would only take a second to carry the thing off the truck into the garage. I tripped and caught my hand under the crank pulley and on top of one of those palets. Snapped like a twig and needed 2 surgeries to put it back, still not perfect.
