Default What happened to ***** car? ** UPDATED WITH PICS ** 56K no no

Well since I've had quite a few people ask me what happened to my car now that I am running 0whp, here's the scoop. I'll have some nice pictures later too.

As its been in my sig for a while, I thought my rings were cooked, yet I was still making 188whp/159wtq on a single cam boosted honda. So I decided that until I did my built motor setup I would re-ring my motor and run it for a while.

With the help of CivicZC (Alec) and Beerbongskickass (Pat) and his garage, here's the scoop.

When I got it apart, I found alot more than bad rings. On piston #4 I found the ringlands of the piston to be in about 15 pieces. Oh poo what now? At this point Pat offers up the pistons out of his z6, so we tear the head off of that.

JDM D15B Vtec is basically a de-stroked z6, but the z6 piston is taller, so that was a no go. d15b vtec piston = p08, z6 piston = p28.

Well, this leaves me without a running car, until IDEA! ding. I just bought a d16y7 from a forum member elsewhere, lets throw that in with my head and we'll do it mini-me style. (d16y7 mini-me = 9.6:1 comp ratio, a little higher but still not bad). So from Longview where we were working we head to Vancouver to pick up the motor where it was stored, and get back. It was a BITCH to pull out the d15 block without pulling the tranny and with no cherry picker, but we got it eventually. Next we pulled the y7 head off and inspected the block and the y7 looked really really good. I had good feelings about it.

Putting it in we ran into some road blocks, hard to get a block in with the axles and tranny in, but we got it with some work. Next roadblock was the power steering bracket, wouldn't clear a little spot on the obd2 d16 block, so I got to grinding on the bracket and fixed that.

Next roadblock was the oil pan. my pan was tapped for oil return for the turbo, and doesn't fit the d16. More grinding! Two holes bored out and it fit great. Ok not great but it went on and cleared the girdle under the crank and oil pickup.

Once the motor was back together, we fired it up, and had a pretty bad knock to it at about 2000rpm, my d15b vtec head always had a light tick when it had sat dry a while so I thought it might be that, but then as we ran it to see if it would smooth out the engine made an odd squeak and died. From that point forward the tick was louder and constant thru all rpm's. I still had an idea that it might be the head with a bent valve or something so I decided to pull the vtec head and put the y7 head on. Same results, plus the obd1 distributor required a little grinding to fit onto that head. Only thing left for it to be making that kind of noise was the rod bearing. So now I have two bad motors and my car is sitting in Longview. This post will be way better with pics. I'll get em up when I can.

As of now I have found a new d16y8 shortblock from a 2000 EX Coupe that was pulled out for a b swap by Race Dezign, for $125. That with my JDM D15B vtec head should work out since it seems the head was ok. I still need to tap the correct pan for the oil return and stupid me left it in Pat's garage.

Nice. If you need an additional head I could send you my A6 :P

I was wondering who the hell you were, then I realized after you said about the BoostedEJ1. It confuses the hell out of me when people change their names.

I've been thinking of changing my name.. I like it, it's original, but I don't even own a (running) CRX anymore. Hopefully I will but hey. I'm thinking of copying Kyle and just go with my given name.. Daniel

Forgive me if I'm insulting your intelligence. You can see if it's a rod bearing by pulling spark plug boots one at a time. If it quiets down, you can bet that it's a rod bearing. Though....it doesn't work for some people...
