use ball joint pullers (rent it)

Re:what the F#$% do i have to do! hub problem.

well maybe youll have to take it to the machine shop. they can probably do it for like 5 bux.

Re:what the F#$% do i have to do! hub problem.

well i can do the wheel studs i am sure, if i could get that far.

Re:what the F#$% do i have to do! hub problem.

you can not loosen the top join or the bottom one

Re:what the F#$% do i have to do! hub problem.

the part that the wheel studs are through. once you take off the axle nut, should come off wiht a little convincing right?

Re:what the F#$% do i have to do! hub problem.

oh u r doing the back?
drum brakes right?
yea after u take off the axle nut.
all u need to do is hammer that ---- out.
just HAMMER it out. do it at an angal

Re:what the F#$% do i have to do! hub problem.

nope. this is front passenger side. removed axle nut, push back the drive axle and WHAM! but it never came loose. Am I doing it wrong?

should i try to heat it up? i got a torch. if that doesnt work i can set the house on fire......

Re:what the F#$% do i have to do! hub problem.

last time i checked? you have to use a press to get it out and a press to put the new one back in.

take it to a shop that has a bench press and flash a $10 in their face.

slowcivic 10-24-2004 08:20 AM

Re:what the F#$% do i have to do! hub problem.

so i have to take the whole assembly off, and hav it pressed out from the back?

yes sir

Re:what the F#$% do i have to do! hub problem.

I might be totally mistaken in my take on this. It seems like you are missing something simple.

1. unbolt the brake line bracket from the knuckle.
2. remove caliper.
3. disconnect tie rod end.
4. seperate LCA from ball joint
5. seperate the upper part of the knuckle
6. pull out the hub and knuckle out

Step six is where you seem to be having trouble????

Just get a piece of wood or somthing soft and send it with a hammer to push the spline end out of the hub.

Maybe I am just not seeing what you are trying to do.

I concur, you cannot disassemble the hub without a press.

Re:what the F#$% do i have to do! hub problem.

the hub is located inside the knuckle, its a sealed bearing, if all you are trying to do is remove the wheel stud heres what you do, you said front passenger side correct ? well as long as your not in a 90-97 accord your in luck here ill walk you thru it

1.) remove the tire
2.) take a 17mm deep socket and remove the caliper pirch bolts; remove loaded caliper.
3.) remove the rotor, may have to hit it with a hammer to get it off.
4.) turn the broken stud to line up even with the tie rod arm
5.) Slam the stud with a 5lb sledge about 3 times dead on the head it should pop out after 1-2
6.) take a disk grinder and grind one side of the stud head (this is the part that will sit behind the hub assem) to where it has a flat side but not touching the threads.
7.) line up the flat side of the stud to the hub, slide it in hit it with a hammer a couple times to seat
8.) take a impact gun 19mm of course on it. put a washer or spacer on the new inserted stud, put the new lug nut on over the spacer, and drive it in to seat it, not too much, dont wanna break it.
9.) re assemble car and drive. :)

Re:what the F#$% do i have to do! hub problem.

yeah no amount of prying was getting this bitch off. so i removed the whole freakin' thing. took it to a buddies house and pressed that fucker out from the back. its about damn time. lets see. it was supposed to be a brake job, and ended up a total clusterfuk. i tightened a bolt to seperate the rotor from the hub, blam! the top of the rotor exploded. never seen that happen before....couldnt get the damn wheel off, one of the wheel studs was messed up. thats what made the whole day. thanks for trying to help everyone.

Re:what the F#$% do i have to do! hub problem.

i had to pay a tire shop $65. to install a wheel stud. they needed a hydraulic press to install the hub back on the spline and a puller to get it off the spline.

Re:what the F#$% do i have to do! hub problem.

On the back their is a snap ring, get that out then press out the hub with a press. (Its alot easier to go get a complete spindle at a junkyard for $60.00)

-The new wheel bearing and hub assembly is gonna be well over $140.00 :-X

Re:what the F#$% do i have to do! hub problem.

you guys are wack. i took off my front knuckle assembly and got a socket about the size of the hub and hammered it out. it works. then put the new studs on put that baby back on. greased it up. and put the wheel bearing back on. BTW i did this on my 93 coupe. ;D

Re:what the F#$% do i have to do! hub problem.

Okay, here is the way. Did it two weeks ago. I have hammered out old studs and put new one in before without removing the hub, but trust me, this way is a lot easier, plus it's the only way to install extend studs.

1: remove wheel, rotor, caliper, axle nut, bla bla bla.
2: Get(rent, buy, borrow) a slide hammer with hub adaptor.
3. bolt slide hammer to hub using wheel studs.
4. slam the hammer hard a few times to remove hub(it will come with a few whacks)
5: after the hub it off, whack old studs out, pull new one in using washers, impact and wheel nut.
6: put hub back on knuckle straight and using slide hammer to whack hub back on (slowly tighten axle nut otherwise bearing will fall out the back.
7: hammer in to fully seated bearing and not excessive play.
8: put car back together.

If you want pictures, do an archive search in honda-tech.com on wheel studs. It should be one of the first one to pop up.
