SMF forum software is free, if you have a decent internet connection at home you can save alot of cash by starting off that way. setup apache 2, php5, mysql 5 and you can do it all like that from home until you start getting traffic. then change to a real host for like 10 bucks a month. I own a few decent forums running a bunch of different types of software so if you want some help with it hit me up on aim. (Brain90992)

The hardest thing when you start up is unique content and getting traffic. if you have something your good at that you feel can convince people to join then by all means go for it. I'm a developer, mostly writing apps that read/write to cell phones and consoles for reflashing and modding so that is somehing unique that gets traffic. i'm sure you have something you can offer people.

Good luck.

theres a lot to it other than just setting it up cause trust me if no one likes it that open forum will become your forum cause no one will give it the time a day trust me i have first hand exp and even though my site doesnt have a many members its still cool on my book it was really ment to be a second rate hmt were people could come talk about cars and be no censorship and no hurt fealings and if there were i would ban the -----s hhaah some day i hope for it to be a great site but at the moment its only me and about 20 other members and a ---- load of bots and spammers..

---- for what its worth OP, i've got a new site waiting to be started(no time to start or find staff) its just a basic tech forum, completely empty nothing on it but smf, shoutbox and a few mods and sections.....6 users lol hosting paid for 2 years. if you wanna play around with some different systems shoot me a PM and i'll let your ---- around with it and see if you got what it takes to bring in traffic before you go on your own. i've helped quite a few people this way. my original site has been nicknamed "the training grounds" because of this lol. its not really a good thing for me cause i lost a few decent staff but it works out for the best.

Re: What does it take to start a forum?

Its pretty simple, I started a motorcycle forum about two months ago and its up to around 80 members already, been spamed a little bit but I'm usually on top of it. Its fairly cheap and easy to do. Buy a domain name, get some space, you don't need very much web space for a smaller forum since its mainly all text.

and www.ehostpros.com
