My father always has strange project cars. He had an old Trans Am, then Nova SS, then Karma Ghia (or wtf it is), and now a couple Porsche 914s.
I think they're ugly as ----, but whatever. He thinks my CRX is ugly too. |

late 944's are pretty reliable cars. What year and type are you looking at? Check out Pelicanparts.com and scope the 944 forums and such.

Ask Hitchikkr, he owned one and works on them. He's a big fan... the cars aren't bad mechanically, but like anything they need some specialized attention to detail.

All front engine watercooled are mechanic's cars. Only the 944 turbo is even close to worth it. I bought mine cheap off a customer who didnt want to spend the cash to restore it. If you cant stand to work on a dsm, dont even think about a Porsche.

Pelican has some good stuff, avoid the ---- out of any porsche forum except Renntech. The others are the German equivalent to Honda-tech. Long story short, unless you just absolutely love the car and want a project to slowly spend money on, stay away from a Porsche. Chances are you wont be happy with the car just as a 'picked it up cheap' kinda ride. my $.02 |
