try a "big" wire for the small ground.

there is too much resistence somewheres and all the current is going through that one wire.

He probably used speaker wire for the ground.

If there was resistance behind the cable then it would be a lessened flow reaching the ground and the issues of the burning ground/cable would occur before hand, if the wire itself is to small of a gauge what others suggested and i have pondered before hand then it would be an easy fix going with a larger size wire that can handle such load/current.

18 year old kid with butt connectors. It could be alot of things. These cars are 20 years old and falling apart.
