what 2 look 4
I just picked up an ihi turbo off an Isuzu I-mark for $50. I really want to know if its in good shape before I use it. I already checked for shaft play and that was non exsistent. what else should I check for.

those turbos aren't supposed to have any shaft play ever i believe, only ball bearing turbos are supposed to have play, it lets oil into the bearings or something
its really hard to tell unless you run it on a car. if it blows oil or something then its bad. or you can take it apart and look at the seals... but if you mess with that you'll ---- up the seals taking it apart.

No, shaft play is normal. When oil is pumped in and the turbo is spinning it rides on a film of oil, it needs some play in order to function.

You guys would be suprised, lots of brand new turbos, and reman turbos have shaft play right out of the box.. Its very minor, and nothing to worry about (up and down shaft play) its the in and out shaft play that is the worst.

Re:what 2 look 4
i bought a brand new core for mine. it has end play..
The oild pressure will pin the shaft to the center of this gap.. that is a normal situation, at some point the play becomes more than the seal can handle, then is when oil will blow out of it. The core's are cheap! look on ebay, got mine for $125
