$500 purple beater, bad headgasket
headgasket- $39, 4 hours
rear end collision $2,500 (pAYD@y!!)
new rear bumper $40
Paintjob- $42

Masked off all the important areas, wiped down with wax and grease remover, and 8 cans of duplicolor truck, van, suv universal black later.

Tips for next time: Mask off one panel at a time, overlap spray, and get it as uniformly wet as possible without runs. I found that spraying the trunk wet and getting mist on the already dry quarters resulted in a foggy look. It is what it iz, yO!!

Re: Were have you painted A/your car? How did it come out?

I painted it in the garage. It took me about an hour. I didn't sand/wetsand ----. Hell, I don't even wash the car. I just didn't want it purple anymore.

If you have the gun and compressor, I'd do a single stage red. ---- all that sanding/wetsanding ----, unless this is your pride and joy. In that case, I'd send it out somewhere, much like where the shuttle is right now. :6

I paint for a living too, but nothing with wheels on it. I think with the help of your friend who does it everyday, you guys should be able to do a bang up job in the garage.

I repainted my front right 1/4 panel after some ------ hit it in a parkinglot.

Used my compressor with 2 inline dryers on it, a small touch-up gun w' Toyota B202. Took alittlewhile, but it was fine. It's 95% prep to get good paint. To keep the dust off the finish while it was curing i sat a sawhorse beside the car & threw an old blanket over that & the top of the car to keep the wind from hitting it.

you can just wet sand the run and the orange peel you got and still make it turn out good

After reading your post I wouldn't recommend trying it yourself.

I wouldn’t do it outside unless you’re just rattle canning it. I did mine in my garage and it looks ok, I still have a couple bugs in the clear, but there jdm bug so it’s uber cool

Make a paint booth by stapling up plastic in a garage. Worked for me 3x.

I painted my car with a foam roller and flat black rust paint in the parking lot of my apartment. I think I have six coats on, with two wet sands in there somewhere. I gave up cause I don't care, the car is one colour, that's what matters.

Re: Were have you painted A/your car? How did it come out?

I would recommend doing the prep work, take as many parts off the car as possible, and dropping it off at Maaco. I had my 75 malibu painted by them 5 years ago, and even after sitting outside under a tarp since then, it still looks good enough to put it in shows.

Be sure to first specify with the Maaco you are dealing with what you want painted and what you want taped.
You might even want to tell them you will do the tape job of the hard parts yourself (something I should have done and payed for not doing with hours of using a razor blade).
Get the cheapest paint, since no matter what paint you buy (and they have some pricey options), it is still a maaco job.
Investigate their reputation by asking for a tour of their garage when they are closed (I did it on a Sunday) to get an idea of how they prep cars in there, and how the cars look after they are sprayed.
