went to the track last night**PICS**

i went to the track for the first time ever. i've never street raced from a solid stop or a rolling start so i didn't know what the ---- i was doing on my first run. best run, the last run was a 14.75. this is with a boosted 99'si, t3 .60trim at 11psi. dynod' at 246 hp 202 tq.pitiful but high trap speeds. :-\ does lower tire pressure make a good difference in street tires? what do you guys recomend for tire pressure?
1st run:
r/t... .775
60'... 3.93
330... 8.343 <---what's 330???
1/8... 11.798
MPH... 74.65
1000.. 14.618
1/4... 16.93
MPH... 95.55
2nd run:
r/t... .99
60'... 2.8
330... 6.993
1/8... 10.19
MPH... 80.5
1000.. 12.925
1/4... 15.172
MPH... 103.96
3rd run was only 1/10th a second slower than my fourth which was the best run. 4 runs that day.
4th run:
r/t... .803
60'... 2.709
330... 6.802
1/8... 9.92
MPH... 80.9
1000.. 12.56
1/4... 14.75
MPH... 104.6
this was on street tires, some champiros i got a good deal on they still had 70%thread in the front 50%thread in the back. my last run i put the front tire pressure down to 35psi. max psi on the tire says 44psi. i should've gone 25psi. i stil had fun even though i had some major traction problems. anybody know where i can get drag radials at a good price?
1st run

3rd run was against a mazda 6 stock which was i whooped dirty sorry no pics i wasn't taking the pics.
here i'm on the first run grinding 2nd after peeling out all through 1st almost...sucks

Damn those are high 60ft... did you lube your tires with mobil-1 before each run?

Re:went to the track last night**PICS**

you think i'll run better w/lower tire psi? i got champiros
tires"cheapiros" they're good for street but on the track they sucked. i'll be getting some bfgoodrich drag radials soon. think lower tire pressure will make a difference in the champiros?

Re:went to the track last night**PICS**

A 14.75 run at 104.6 MPH?????????

At that speed you should be well into the low to mid 13's. What's up with these times?

robs99si 09-18-2004 04:13 PM

Re:went to the track last night**PICS**

shitty tires and lack of race experience i've only raced last night. i'll be going again to the track soon though.
you think i can get low 13s' on these same tires w/lower air pressure?

Re:went to the track last night**PICS**

Will some practice I bet you will hit 14 flat with the cheapo tires. Lowering the pressure will help but it won't be too noticable with those tires. Did you drive through the water?

Re:went to the track last night**PICS**

wow a 2.7 60 foot.... you dumping the clutch @ redline or something?

robs99si 09-18-2004 04:49 PM

Re:went to the track last night**PICS**

no i rev to 3000rpm and then i drop the clutch feathering it out just a little. how do you think i should do it?

87na_rx7 09-18-2004 04:53 PM

Re:went to the track last night**PICS**

i dunno, i only have raced rwd cars.. its a lil easier then with a fwd car

Re:went to the track last night**PICS**

then is there anybody here that can give me some advice on how to race down the track real good? especialy on the launching part. and if lowering my tire psi will make a noticable difference. i felt like going home after my first run of 16.7.lol i stayed though and i stil had a fun time there. crap there are some fast freakin cars there.

You need to dump the clutch at a low enough rev so you don't bake the tires off it and high enough so the car doesn't bog out once it gets tractions. 3000 is probably about right, you need some slicks or sticky tires to get your 60 foot times better. From the numbers, it looks like you have a quick car, except it spins too much comming off the line.

Re:went to the track last night**PICS**

And try dropping the tire pressure some more, 35psi is way too high.. and were you doing burnouts to heat up the tires? because that'll help.

Re:went to the track last night**PICS**

i wasn't doing burnouts. i don't know crap about his stuff.
i tried doing a burnout on my first run but in first gear i bounced off the rev limiter and i stoped. do i ease off the gas in 1st for the burn out or do i shift into 2nd?
is 25psi good for 195/55/15s?

Stan 09-18-2004 05:43 PM

Re:went to the track last night**PICS**

just haul up the ebrake.. if it's too much power and bounces off rev limiter, then let off a bit.. just heat the tires up really good. Hmm, I'll post a video, hang on.

Re:went to the track last night**PICS**

I would drop the pressure (fronts only) :D to 25psi, and don't go through the water. You won't benefit from doing a burnout, but you may benefit from just doing a little quick spin to get any rocks/gravel off of the tires.
It's hard to say what rpm you should launch at, it's more of a "feeling" thing than anything. When I feel like I get a good launch is when I rev it high enough to just break the tires loose just a little, and slowly back off the gas if you feel your getting any more than "a little" slippage. When you back off after getting a little too much slippage, right when you feel like your gettting 100% traction, get back on it all the way, then shift to second when you hit redline.
I say it's just a feeling because all of this takes place in .000003434 of a second. You want to rev high enough to where you don't bog, but any tire spinage is bad.
Tire pressure and tires play a part of traction/spinning, but your foot is the correction to all of this.

Re:went to the track last night**PICS**

those trap speeds are good for low 13's thats pretty damn impressive. Are you using a .48/.60 or a .63/.60?

something to consider would definately be to drop the tire pressure down to ~25psi in the front tires. Keep the back tires high. If you are using plain street tires just go "AROUND" the water and do a quick burnout if you want to clean up your tires. The rest is pretty much the driver... Stealth and some of the guys have already explained it so I dont want to be redundant.

If you've tried all of this stuff and still feel like you're not getting the best time, time to invest in some street slicks aka Skinnies from Mickey Thompsons or M&H or whatever brand you want. Those will definately drop your ridiculuous 0-60ft times (its killing you!).

Let us know what else happens.

Re:went to the track last night**PICS**

like stealth said, unless you have slicks burning out is pointless, by the time you make it to the line the heat has dispursed....other than that i cant really tell ya, im still working on my launches too, 2.6 60's for me, on 17's, which doesnt help at all

the maxda 6 i raced on my last 2 runs and he went around the water. i didn't. i'll be back to that track for some V8 killings. they race on wednesday and friday nights but it's a 1 1/2hr. drive :'(

Wait.. You drove thru the water and didn't do a burnout? With your trap speeds, you def should be in the mid 13's easy.

Re:went to the track last night**PICS**

yeah i think i can do mid 13s'. it was my first time at the track and it was kinda overwhelming.

that cammaro ss in the pic did a 13.95 when i ran with it. it was my 2nd run.

Boost/FwD/Short Gears, and street tires. My kind of Guy. Traction is just a few thousand bucks around the corner. Just kidding man, but your definately going to need some better rubber and some stiff springs.. Good luck with the racing in the future and yes i think you can hit 13's

Re:went to the track last night**PICS**

when your in the burnout box.. you dont have to ping the rev limiter..breakem loose let them spin for a couple of seconds so they warm up. or go race ass soon as you get to the track when your tires are still warm..you spinning through first is typical of someone racing for the first time. you have a nice setup.. a fast car is good but you have to practice your launches. the more practice you get the faster your times will be. good luck get a video for us

Everyone has already givin you good advise.
Stay out of the water box. Just give the tire a quick spin,to kick any rocks off, and invest in some slicks. 22x8x15 work great ;) Your set up is simillar to my freinds. He's best on BFG's is 13.31 Just keep practicing.Go every chance you get.g/l.

Re:went to the track last night**PICS**

The joys of tire spin...

I know this too well..my car's best time was a 14.5 @ 105mph with a 2.6 60ft's. My car at the time was boosting only 8psi on a semi built b16 running a T3/TO4E. GOod luck.

What I was told was try to ride on the clutch on take off until the tires hook up.

Re:went to the track last night**PICS**

damn, i thought my 1/4 et's were shitty :P ;) my best is a 14.0 at 102, that was on 10 psi. i'm running a stock clutch though and it slips all the way to redline just about the whole way down the track. you're 60 ft. times are horrible. my first time at the track i was pullin 2.2's if you got your 60 ft.'s down, you could shave a second off that time easily! get some new tires :P

Re:went to the track last night**PICS**

i was going thru the water pit before all those runs on 45psi in the tires and not doing burnouts before the runs.
i'm going again within 2 weeks. i'll be running with 25psi in the front tires and i'll go around the water pit this time instead of wetting my tires before each run. first time i've ever raced my car, i've only raced it once against another car, and that was on the highway.

lower that ---- to like 15 psi in the front and don't drive through the water box unless you plan on doing a burn out. some people say to do a burn out on street tires, some people say not to b/c the tires actually grip better if they're colder. i just spin them around for a second to get all the dirt/debris off.

15psi? is that how you ran them? i got the stock rims on there w/195/55/15s. some people told me 25psi.

----, i only run 30 psi on the street. i have stock rims too (well, stock size anyways). i run 15 psi at the track. they'll look pretty low, but it's fine.
