well, im going back to school

i just set up a campus visit and admissions appointment for itt-technical institute, i should be starting in fall of '06, it will take 3 years to get my bachelors degree in IT networking and system security, some of you may not give a ----, but i just thought i would share being this is a huge step for me in life, i'm 24 years old, and havent been in school for 6 years now, and i have been married for 4 years, my wife is starting to talk about popping out babies, so i thought i better do something to make some real money eventually, instead of being a light duty automotive tech for $10/hr. for the rest of my life, i'm scared as hell to start school again, hopefully it ends up being a worth while investment..... :6

very true, i agree, i could make good money as a tech, but i would have to go to automotive school first, because to be flat out, my ability to do diag on driveabilty problems, and my ability with electrical problems, is ----, i dont know enough to make that kind of money, and i just decided that computer science would get me further in life, rather than going to automotive tech school..... :-\

just the way you were talking about tech school being hard and then saying you would do the computer science instead. I was assuming you thought it would be easier.

I've got a degree in IT ----.

Welcome to the most overly saturated employment market in the world. Where every job you apply for will be applied for by 3 million other people who have been doing it longer than you, know more than you, have a more impressive resume than you. Point is its a very competetive market. Make sure you get every last certification test under your belt that you can, those often mean more to any company than your degree will, and will help you out a ton.

Bust out A+, Net+, MCP (or even MCSE), CCNA, and all those various certs as fast as you can. Get into a few and you could be making a decent $30-40K wage before you're even done getting your degree.

Re: well, im going back to school

Fook is correct.I went back to school for IT and after talking with numerous professors and teachers found that the job market is too competitive and that it is very saturated. Since I already make around the $50k now I figured I should stick to service work. Plus the fact I can't see going back to a job where I work in the same place day after day. I like being on the road.

Are you goin full time? Rule of thumb is if your havent been in school in awhile take a much smaller load has your goin to struggle until you get back into the swing of things. I go back in the fall of 2006 at Chico State has I have a little over a year left till i finish my finance degree after droppin out of UNLV last year.

wow that scares the hell out of me, should i consider a degree in finance or something instead? i would hate to invest all that time to get a bachelors degree and not get a decent job out of it, but at the same time you claim i could get a 30-40k a year job before i even graduate? the certs are really that important? gives me some prospective on the whole thing though, you got any more insight into this career path? if you could go back to school all over again, would you have gotten a different degree? and do you consider there to be a vast difference in the job market for people with straight up information technology degrees, versus people with a degree specifically in network administration and security? or is there a big difference at all?

How do you feel about the medical field, there are alot of good paying jobs that are 4year or 2year degrees. RN, x-ray tech, respirtory therapist...etc.

Re: well, im going back to school

I have one more class after tonight to finish up my degree. Got my A+ and MSCE but still doing construction because I can't take a pay cut just yet. Although I fix computers on the side for about $25-$35 an hour and get quit a few calls just from word of mouth. A couple of the guys from class have decent starting jobs, but most can't find one. But it could be different in your area. I would say you should have some knowledge and intrest in computers other wise it is more then likely a waste of your time.

Re: well, im going back to school

well, just for a follow up, i am now signed up to start school in june, i decided to go with electrical engineering, instead of IT, there is still a great deal of IT classes involved in electrical engineering, but the best part of it is i will be learning to build hardware, printed circuit boards and such, should be an interesting journey, total cost for my 3 years 9 months of education is $72,000, and i will have a bachelors degree in electrical engineering and communications...... :S

Re: well, im going back to school

You can make bank in electrical engineering. My wifes dad was one.

Re: well, im going back to school

man, i couldn't even imagine going back to school when i'm 24. i'm 19 right now, and i'm about to graduate wyotech in 3 months. i just took the summer off, then went right back. i'm really liking the way they have it set up, because it's probably the most accelerated automotive program in america. i'll be completley done w/ my core auto program in 2 weeks already, and i've only been here for 6 months. but i don't think i could handle goin to school like you're going to, congrats. good luck

wyotech is ------ stupid, youre paying 50 dollars a day and learning 10 cents worth of bullshit

Re: well, im going back to school

you only learn 10 cents worth of bullshit if your a worthless fuckoff and don't bother to work on anything that they give you, which most people do. there aren't too many people that come out of wyotech w/ as much as they could have. but i'm sure you know all about wyotech, eh scott?

scottsi 03-09-2006 06:22 PM

Re: well, im going back to school

youre an idiot, you'll learn 50x more working as a bitchboy at a dealership and learning what they teach there on hand than going to wyotech.

darksol2005 03-09-2006 06:34 PM

Re: well, im going back to school

no ----. you'll never learn as much in a ------- school as you would working someplace and actually doing it hands on. going to school first makes it so you can do it on your own as soon as ur done instead of having to have someone teach you how to do their job, on their time. then going to school gets you a better paying job w/ better bennifets faster too, instead of bein a dealership bitchboy washing cars, and doing an oil change or 2 and not getting into what you wanna do for a few years. you can say the ---- ur saying about any school, so educate urself a little bit and quit talking ---- about everything everyone else does

scottsi 03-09-2006 08:43 PM

Re: well, im going back to school

i went to wyotech, and i feel like a stupid ass for even applying. paid way to much money for not learning enough, if you arent mechanically inclined but then by all means go there, but i built a turbo kit learned to tune all by teaching myself, i'll be damned if im paying 50 bucks a day to learn how to balance and rotate tires or ------ change breaks, even jeff himself said that never pay to goto any automotive school and look where hes at.

hotrex 03-10-2006 03:09 AM

Re: well, im going back to school

college is the biggest fad ever. you dont need it to be successful in life.

waste of money imo unless your gonna be a surgeon or a ------ rocket scientist.

desk jobs are for lamers and my buddy has had a degree in that IT ---- for almost a yr now and hes about to give up trying to find a job because noone will hire him.

keep spinning the wrench
