Welding upgrade
 

I was watching TV and they where talking about converting a MIG to be able to weld aluminium. The product is made by lincoln electric, here is the link.

I'm curious if anyone can give me any nfo on this before I email them to see if this will work with my hobart unit. I'm curious if anyone has used this or seen it in operation.

Basically it replaces part of the feed mechanism inside to deal with the softer aluminium, and then a teflon insert in the gun feed to reduce friction. Just incase you wanted to know.

You could get that but you would only be able to use .035 wire. and if you wanted to weld steel you would need to put your old liner and drive rolls back in because you dont want to mix up steel and alluminum. the steel wire will contaminate the alluminum and you will get sooty welds. I bought a spool gun istead. and its only used with alluminum and i keep my regular gun for only steel....oh and it doesnt mention that you will have to buy a pure argon tank as well... $0.02 , dave

I already have a pure argon tank setup, so hte 55 US didn;t seem to be overwhelming and spool guns are ------- expensive. I know it will be a bitch when I want to switch back and forth between steel an aluminium but I figured it was a good low cost alternative. :-\

I may pic it up and give a little write up on it. Also, they dop have different wire thicknesses for the MIG units so you are not limited to just 0.035

i would stick with .035 or else it will bind up right after the drive wheels =\

It'll work fine but it's a pain cause you have to oswitch out the wheels and liners every time you go from steel to al.
