Is welding oil pans difficult? Can you weld steel to aluminum?
 

Ive got a perfectly fine oil pan sitting minus the fact its been drilled for a oil return too low. I've got a perfect sized piece of thin flat mild steel to weld over the hole with. Will that work if I take it to a guy that uses a mig? I think it should be fine, but I just figured I'd ask since you guys that weld like reading simple boring questions. ;)

get a piece of aluminum to weld over it

Or you can get two plates to block the hole (one inside one outside) bolt the two together and sandwich a bunch of JB weld in the middle for sealant. It aint pretty but it'll get you running till you get anouther pan

Put a plug in the bad hole with jb weld. ;)

Lol, good ol jb weld! I think i'll skip on the jb weld this time though. I am gonna try and find some thick aluminum sheet metal and just weld a piece of it over it. Well see how it turns out :-\ Otherwise I'll see what the yard wants for a used one. Thanks for the replies.

No one will actually see it, As long as it seals up, you should be fine. But if you can get a new one cheap, get it.

JB Weld sucks. I tried that and it broke loose and leaked the first time I tried to torque the line down. I just did it right and got an aluminum fitting welded in. Cost me $35 incl the fitting, but I don't have to worry about it now.

pussies, you can't just slap jb weld on, it takes a master to use it properly ;)

The oilpan is made out of aluminum?? :-X
A friend of mine welded a steel pipe on one for his oil return and added some JB-weld around it.
It's holding up fine though....
