Welders

What kind of welders do you guys use to make manifolds. What would be good to do basic log manis, downpipes, exhaust, ic piping, and maybe some more complex manifolds. I'm pretty sure I'd be out of my price range to look at a TIG. I'm sure most of you use migs, what kind of mig do you use?

Re:Welders

i think they use tig not sure though but it seems right.

Re:Welders

ive used a 135 amp Bluepoint (Snap-On) mig welder, worked great. A good tig will probably run you into the thousand plus range... a good mig you could score for a few hundred

Re:Welders

Does anybody here use a mig to make complex mani's, if so what kind and what kind of price range?

Is this complex?...

I used a lincoln mig pac 15. The manifold is about 75% done with welding. Its not as pretty as TIG but it holds air and won't break so I really don't give a ---- about the fashion show part of it. I can get pics this weekend maybe of what the welds look like.

Re:Welders

whitey you amatuer that ---- ain't complex, that's the easy way to make manifolds, now if you want a challenge, make a log manifold :P

Re:Welders

i just got a lincoln tigmaster 185 \

watch out for my line of NiGGaPlEaSe manifolds soon.

Re:Welders

i have the same welder as hotrex, works great, and if the welds come out not so hot, grind them down

I just bought a Millermatic 175 and added on the spool gun option so i can weld alluminum=) out the door @ $1531..ouch but i think its worth it. everybody that i talk to says tig is way harder to learn than mig. i did this the second day i owned the mashine.

heres some pics of my first project =)

Is there any point to getting a wire feed?

I like most people can't afford a Tig.

Thats more than a wire feed. Its a mig.A wire feed is for ok if your short on cash. But all the cool guys have a mig and the ballers have a tig. ;)

Cray91 11-09-2004 09:29 PM

Re:Welders

What I meant was that TIG for me is outta the question. So is it worth spending the money on a Wire Feed, or just save up and get a Mig.

What is the major difference, quality, ease, price.

d16forlife 11-09-2004 09:40 PM

Re:Welders

Well a mig is going to give you a cleaner weld than just a wire feed. With a mig you can weld stainless steel too(with the right gas).Plus most MIGs have a better heat/feed adjustment(couse they are more expensive=more fucntions) wich makes it easier to penetrate and give a better weld.

But If you just want something for charge pipes and exhaust, just a wire feed is fine.

Re:Welders

Does anybody have any suggestions for a good starter setup for a MIG??

Re:Welders

i have a farmhand 115 wire feed /mig i got at tractor supply co.(lol) it comes with regulator and is setup for mig all it needs is the tank...i think i got a package deal with welder..startup kit..and autodark helmet for just about 300..even just using the fluxedcore makes decent weld..so you can do ok without spending money refilling mig gas all the time

Re:Welders

mig = wire feed !!! lol just look at how thick the mashine can weld and how thick you need to weld and match them up. dont forget to check out ebay some times you can get used mashines for cheap..just have to keep an eye out 0.o

get that...

I just got that welder with cart/regulator and bougth the gas/wire/helmet local. It works well and is pretty easy to use if you know at all what you are doing. I welded a new exhaust for my car about a week after we got one.

Just make sure you have 220v available...

This ^^ is a wire feed welder. It only uses flux core wire.

Probably, how like a kick stand holds a bike up.. support.. bracing maybe? :P

Re:Welders

that goddamn manifold is made out of 8 gauge, it could support the weight of the car.

Re:Welders

the good thing about tigs are that they make small beads, you could do it with a mig but it might look like ---- depending on your skills

DOOD look at the picture it says "MIG 130EN"

I know what your trying to say though... you can wire feed flux core and there is no need for an inert gas. But unless you buy a cheap ass machine most will mig as well as use flux core....as long as you can switch polarity =)
