Weight loss
K guys, i have a 93 si coupe, big heavy fully loaded pig, now im also a big heavy loaded pig so i need to put one of us on a diet, i now have bought a 91 si as a daily driver so i no longer have to worry about rear seats (kids) and power windows (wife) so i can really get this thing down a few pounds, what im wondering is how far i can go and how much weight can i ditch? Can the motor for the power roof be removed? Is it a huge deal to convert to manual windows, can i dump all the power steering stuff and just cap the lines at the rack? The other question is with the rear seat out does that let the rear of the car flex and should i install a tie bar at the back? Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks in advance.....

Re: Weight loss
i took everything out of my accord i had. a 96. no heater core, ac, carpet, seats. i only had one seat and a steering wheel. and i didn't have to put a tie bar or anything. u can even scrape up the sound dedner ---- under the carpet. looks like tar. thats weighs alot lol
|
Re: Weight loss
Funny that i have heard that before but i have had my carpet up a couple of times and no tar stuff anywhere, i dunno if it's just a Canada thing but yah, just shiny paint..my buddies hatch was the same, northing anywhere...odd, any idea how much weight you took off? Im thinking of even pulling the roof out and just tack welding a patch there, im going to loose all the door supports, hood supports, latch, trunk supports, rebar's, i want to keep a radio and two speakers, and the dash, im hoping that's it, im just wondering what a realistic goal for weight would be, things like washer fluid resevoir i dont need, i will keep the heater cause It gets way cold some morning in the spring and fall, but yah, anything else i can think of will go....

Re: Weight loss
This is the easiest way to shave off a few good lbs from your car, if you are willing to sacrafice a few things offcourse.
1) Spare tire and jack(only put them back in when you are leaving town and wont be local for a while, they are good to have) 2) AC, not just the pump, EVERYTING, connectors, wiring, the aluminum hoses that go to the firewall. 3) Power steering pump, hoses, resevoir. 4) Carptet, the carpet is quite heave on a car, you can replace it with secions of Black Astroturf(the stuff you use for backyards it comes in green, black, brown and other colors, about 50cents a square foot) 5) useless engine plastics, inner fender plastics 6)if you wanna go all out, remove the sound shield glued to the floor, this may take a while but its a good 15lbs of rubber glued to the floor. 7)when going to the track, remove the rear seats and pass side front seat, that loses about 15lbs as well In total you can probably shave off 100-150 lbs of ----, basically that is like removing 1 person from your car, and we all know what it feels like when there is 1 extra person sitting in the car. |

Re: Weight loss
if you do everything above, yeah about 75 lbs since you dont have AC,as for steering, it wont hurt anything, my civic had power steering and I took everything out and its been fine for over a year.
I have my interior in right now, I just take it out when going to the track. so yeah, try this, when you have all of the above taken out, try to lift it all, Its gonna be heavy as hell. the biggest weight is the AC pump, the power steering, the sound shield, and the passenger side seat, door pannels dont really weigh much, maybe 1lb each so its not worth taking them out, I like looks as well unless i'm building a race car then it dont matter. carpet and underpadding will weigh around 15 lbs, you say your carpets smell, meaning they are dirty and there is moisture, so the undepading will most likely be wet if you live in thoes kind of conditions. Hope this helps. |
Re: Weight loss
Thanks man, yah that helps, yep, carpet smells, just old car smell, well with my weight in this wreck it's gonna take alot to make it a "normal" weight......

Re: Weight loss
As far as your weight goes.. if you want to lose it you will.
My uncle was a little lighter than you (460), same height... he has made a drastic change in his diet and exercise regiment, he also had his stomach stapled.. that was like two years ago, now he is at 230 pounds ;) |

You are aware that a stock 4G Si passenger seat alone weighs in at 45 lbs? Whereas that rubber sound deadener material weighs in at 15 ounces for an hour's worth of hassling and $10 in dry ice. |
Re: Weight loss
Yah once i got the carpet out and actually looked there is that sound deadener all over, it was just painted the same color as the car, i left it there, way to much work to take it off....the back of the car sits like a truck now, all the ---- out of the trunk and these b&g cheapass lowering springs, looks like a hillbilly 84 monte carlo with big ass cragar's on the back....i miss the 80's.....
|
Re: Weight loss
